5 Reasons to Visit Dallas This Summer

Dallas can always be counted on for a good time! The sporting events, the sights and sounds, all of it! And the 240 mile drive, while nothing to sneeze at, can actually be quite fun, as long as you stop by Buc-ee’s along the way!

Give Dallas a shot this summer and enjoy!

A few weeks ago, we couldn’t help but put some fuel to the Houston vs. Dallas debate with our list of Top 10 Reasons Houston is Better Than Dallas.  And while we ALL know the astounding facts and reasons behind that case, I also have to admit – I recently discovered that Dallas really isn’t that bad.  Strictly for visiting though, of course.

This past fall, Sister Sites from across the nation packed up and headed to the Big D for our annual Sister Site Conference, and while I cringe to admit this, it was a lot of stinking fun.  I’ve lived my whole life just a few hours south of this city, and even though I’ve visited a time or two, I never realized how much Dallas really has to offer – especially families and especially during the summer months.  Thankfully, our sweet sisters at Dallas Moms Blog put together an over the top visitor’s guide that is packed with fantastic resources and helpful links, so there is no need for me to recreate the wheel on that.  However, I do have five of my top reasons to visit Dallas this summer…

1} The Proximity

With Dallas being just a hop, skip, and a jump away, it makes for a very easy family vacation destination.  For most families, four hours is a definitely doable road trip.  Or if you go the alternate route, you could make a pit stop in Waco to break up the trip as well.  {Plus, the farther north you travel, the lower the humidity.  My hair has never looked so good!}

2} The Accommodations

As I’ve entered into official adulthood, I have gotten super spoiled with Houston and our amazing array of top notch hotels.  My expectation levels are now {admittedly} ridiculously high, so to say I was pleasantly surprised with Dallas is a HUGE compliment to them.  At our recent Sister Site Conference, we had the absolute pleasure of staying at the Omni Dallas Hotel.   The customer service was phenomenal, the rooms were luxurious, and the amenities…oh, the amenities.  From their roof top pool to their stunning spa to their out of this world food – everything was absolutely perfect from check-in to check-out.  While I’m sure there are lots of great accommodation options throughout Dallas, I can’t recommend them enough!

3} The Shopping

It’s no doubt that Dallas has some primo shopping!  From Highland Park Village to Galleria Dallas, upscale shopping areas abound throughout the metroplex.  However, be sure to check out areas like Watters Creek for some fun, family-friendly shopping with restuarants, outdoor events, and even a playground for the kids!

4} The Food

Oooh, the food.  I think it’s safe to say I gained about ten pounds on our trip there last fall.  And it was all so good, I don’t even care.  Of course, Omni Dallas fed us like royalty while we were onsite, but Dallas definitely doesn’t disappoint in restaurants and eateries.  If you’re doing adult-only dining, I’d recommend margaritas and tamales at Mi Cocina {okay, so they have one in The Woodlands too – but I’m obsessed}.  And if you have your kiddos with you, then just head on over to this list of kid-friendly restaurants and choose one.  Or all.

5} The Attractions

On top of the shopping and the food, Dallas also has lots of fun attractions to fill your days!  While they have a lot of similar attractions to Houston like a zoo and an aquarium, they also have some pretty unique spots like a LEGOLAND Discovery Center for all the LEGO loving kiddos, the Perot Museum that is packed with science lessons and hands-on activities, and Reunion Tower with stunning city views.  And like Houston, they offer a City Pass which is perfect if you plan on hitting multiple attractions and want to get a great bang for your buck!

Kelly is the founder of Houston Moms Blog and has lived in this beautiful city nearly all of her life. She has a degree in education from Texas State University and was honored to teach special education for eight years to some of the cutest little kiddos you could ever meet. While teaching, Kelly met Cody – a tall drink of water and country boy to the core – and together, they fell in love, got married, and decided to start a family. In March 2011, they welcomed Hayes into the world, a silly but smart little boy with a story you have to read to believe. And in April 2013, their family was complete with the addition of Hadley, a super gregarious and oh-so-cute baby girl. Now, Kelly devotes her days to caring for her own little ones…and would not trade this new job of hers for the world! In her not-so-spare time, Kelly loves meeting up with her girlfriends for margaritas, failing miserably at Pinterest projects, and exploring this big old city with her two favorite little side-kicks in tow.
