I’m Now That Mom Doing Direct Sales

We’ve all fallen victim to the sales pitches, the parties, and the annoying Facebook newsfeeds. I’ve been there as the loyal {and not so loyal} customer and supported the latest product launches for just about everything – jewelry, skincare, weight loss, clothing, kitchen tools, and makeup. Some of the items I purchased because I truly loved them, while other times I purchased just to support a friend’s new business. I even had a bad experience once years ago where I was promised a makeover and then got locked {yes, actually locked} into the longest sales pitch known to man. Over the years I was the customer, I never once thought I would ever be the one on the other side of the newsfeed – talking about how in love I am with these products and how much the company has changed my life in just one month. In fact, I vowed not to ever be that mom.

Until now.

Don’t worry. You can safely keep reading. This isn’t a post with hidden agendas, trying to get you to buy what I’m selling and join my team. In fact, I’m not even going to tell you what company I joined so you know I’m just here to tell my story of why and how. I work full-time making a great salary and even work part-time doing side work for extra spending money. One might argue that not only do I not have the time for yet another job, but I don’t really have the need. But I beg to differ. Something was still lacking.

With all of my jobs and side gigs, I still didn’t have anything that was my own. I wanted to be able to take control of something, calls the shots, make the decisions, and control my destiny if you will. Only about a month in, I can tell you that I love having a little project that I can work on at my own pace and use my skills for something for me and my family.

If we are being honest here, I also joined for the great discount of the products that I already use and love. If you are thinking about diving into direct sales, make sure it’s with a company that you will actually use. That sounds obvious right? But I can tell you that I’ve been approached by many companies in the past that all made wonderful promises of fun and fortune, but at the end of the day, I just wasn’t that excited about using them myself. Make sure you are excited about it; otherwise it’s going to get old very fast, and your friends and family will be able to tell that you aren’t truly being genuine and authentic.

None of these businesses are “get rich quick schemes,” or at least none of them should be promised as such.  If there is a tale of someone making loads of money right off the bat, that is probably the exception to the rule, and I wouldn’t join solely for that reason. However, we can all agree that the main point of doing direct sales is to make some money.  Some women may simply need a way to make extra spending money for fun things, while others may join as a way to provide for their family in a more significant way. I think many might be in the middle and are looking to see if this might be a way to diversify their income, gain some financial freedom, or explore the “what if they did, in fact, make it big.”  I can say that only a month in, I have already earned a paycheck with yes, real money in it!  Not just products or promises of what’s to come. {Granted it’s not enough to quit my job and retire anytime soon, but hey, cash is cash.}

Finally, I jumped on the direct sales bandwagon for the camaraderie and fun. I love working on a team where women not only support each other, but also have fun doing it.  The team I joined is creative, fun, and going places. As cliche as it sounds, I just sort of knew that this was my time and my team. Motherhood can be lonely and so can working a job day-in and day-out that doesn’t provide much in the way of friendships. This filled that void for me along with the monetary benefits and creative outlet. When the days are long and much of your time is taken up with poopy diapers, spit up, or even a job that doesn’t allow you to use all of your unique skill set, it’s nice to have a fun little distraction and outlet.

So while direct sales may get a bad rap for being pushy, annoying, or even disingenuous, I’m here to tell you that not everyone is like that.  Don’t count us all out just because of the few that might turn you off {or lock you in a sales pitch}!

  1. Oh, I have tried my hand at so many direct sales companies. Each time I absolutely loved the product and wanted the discount. I am sitting in my home office now with a huge stack of products behind me that I need to sell because, well, I got sucked into quotas and goals. I wound up purchasing things I would not use myself. I was very successful for two years, but for some reason God did not give me the drive for advancement that I needed to create a team and found myself just spinning my wheels. (this has happened a half dozen times before)

    I have two direct sales parties coming up where I get to play the role of the hostess and even though I love the products that will be sold, I will sit on my hands because I just can’t go down that road again. But that is me personally, I know women who have had huge continued success with direct sales. I know women who drive pink vehicles, who spend the summers on trips paid for by the company, but I just could never find the drive in me to get to that level – I just really liked the discount.

    I wish you the best of luck at your new endeavor.

    • Thank you Dana! Good luck to you too! It certainly isn’t easy all of the time which is why I was so careful to join a company and a team that I was truly passionate about. Otherwise, I knew that the newness and shine would wear off eventually and I’d be stuck! Who knows what will happen in the future, but I’m loving it and doing well for now! Thanks again for reading.

  2. This was SO ME — and I jumped on the bandwagon, too, after getting the facts and vowing to do it my way, and I’ve loved it!

    Thank you for writing this, and kudos to you, girl! You’re right, we’re not all like “that”. 😉

  3. Curious to know which direct sales company/team you connected with. I jumped in to direct sales in February, had goals (both personal and company driven) and haven’t met a single one. I love to products, but I’m not the “sales pitch” type of person. How do you promote the products/company you represent?

  4. I turned to your site to see if there were any past posts about direct sales because I recently jumped into direct sales as well and I am so happy to see this!! I am also a full time working mom and I’d love to get your advice regarding your experience and any help you can offer!
