Healthy Game Day Wings

Before I share today’s healthier version of a game day fan favorite, I have a confession to make. Today’s recipe is indeed our family’s contribution to the Houston Texans…and we haven’t consistently been eating this meal on football Sundays this season.

That’s correct. We can all lay off Kubiak and Schaub for the Texans’ latest downfall and start pointing fingers right here. We will take some blame for failing to indulge in this tasty good luck charm, leaving our boys to fend for themselves.

I have no clue how I came across this recipe as it was PPE {Pre-Pinterest Era}, but I love that we can enjoy the chicken wing experience without all of the fat and calories. We ate it every Sunday last season, and it took us pretty far!

And now I’m sharing our recipe with you. Let’s turn this season around by doing our part with some tasty, and much healthier, wings!

Healthy Game Day Wings

{Recipe derived from here}

Ingredients ::

  • 1 tablespoon granulated garlic
  • 1 tablespoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 tablespoon oregano
  • 1/2 tablespoon salt
  • 1/4 tablespoon paprika
  • 1/4 tablespoon celery seed
  • 20-25 chicken drummettes *
  • Extra virgin olive oil {2-3 tablespoons}
  • Wing sauce {optional}
  • Ranch dressing

*Entire chicken wings would work as well.

Preparation ::

  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
  2. Line a large cookie sheet with aluminum foil for minimal cleanup.
  3. Mix dry ingredients together in small bowl and set aside.
  4. Place wings in a single layer on baking sheet and drizzle with oil. Toss to coat.
  5. Sprinkle about half of spice mixture on one side of the wings and rub in. Turn wings, sprinkle remaining spices, and rub in.
  6. Allow to marinate 10-20 minutes {while oven preheats}.
  7. Bake 20 minutes. Turn over and bake another 15-20 minutes until desired crispiness.
  8. Allow to cool 5-10 minutes and enjoy with a side of raw veggies…and ranch dressing for dipping too!

We chow down on game days without wing sauce, but my husband has tried coating them a time or two with Frank’s Buffalo Wings Sauce. While tasty, that cancels some of the health factor. I take the skin off my wings as well and enjoy just as much!

Do you have a healthy football season recipe to share? We’d love to add it to our rotation. And fess us! What are your family’s game day superstitions? Let’s enjoy some wings, share some tricks, and will our Texans on to victory!
