The Holiday Card :: What to Wear

Y’all…we know the calendar says September, and the Houston heat hasn’t quite let up. But in about 2.2 seconds it will be Halloween, then Thanksgiving {Sarah’s baby time!}, and then all of a sudden it will be December 1st. And you know what that means…holiday cards filling your mailbox every day for a month!! Sarah here – I have to admit I haven’t taken my holiday cards down from last year. They are still all hanging in my kitchen, and I find absolute delight in catching a smiling face each morning as I head out the door!

2012 Cards
Jessica went with a Happy New Year/Birth Announcement combo
while Sarah pulled off this Christmas Pinterest perfection!

We recently noticed some of our favorite photographer friends advertising holiday mini-sessions on Facebook and realized it was time to start thinking about this year’s perfect holiday card!! We’ve booked our sessions and obviously moved directly into outfit planning!

We took ourselves straight to the internet to seek out Holiday 2013 inspiration, and Sister Pinterest is telling us – it’s all about bright, patterned, mismatched layers this year! We need pops of color in cardigans and infinity scarves for mom. Bold, exciting patterns found in toddler dresses and skirts are mandatory. Dad needs a jewel tone buffalo check shirt. And little brother completes the look with a vest and striped rugby.  To contrast the bright fun patterns, we’re seeing families posed in front of barns, beat up rusty trucks, evergreen wreaths, and of course – trees covered in fall leaves. The effect is crisp, clean, and ready to show up in friend’s and family’s mailboxes come December!

Jessica already has outfits planned, a card picked out, AND her words perfectly formulated. You can find her inspiration board on our Pinterest page as well as some other inspiration we LOVE! Sarah is going to have a hard time steering out of her comfort zone and not heading straight to a Southern-smocked-sweet-darling photo of her {what will be} two kiddos!

Do you plan on going Merry and Bright this year or sticking with a more traditional photo? It is really about the joy of the holiday season and what showcases your own beautiful family…and we can’t wait for our mailboxes to be stuffed full! Come back and check out what we came up with. We’d love to hear your ideas and see more inspiration!

Jessica and Sarah
Jessica and Sarah are tandem bloggers and self-dubbed ‘sister-cousins’ because sometimes the lines get blurred, and they wouldn’t have it any other way. Both New Orleans natives, these cousins transplanted to Houston after Hurricane Katrina and have never looked back. Jessica is the mother of twin girls, Laine and Olivia {March 2010}, and a sweet and curious one year old boy, Owen {Jan 2013}. Sarah is mom to Maggie {Aug 2011}, who keeps her on her toes, and the most adorable little brother, Jack {Nov 2013}! By day, Jessica is a stay at home mom, and Sarah works on the financial and managerial end of the healthcare industry. By naps, lunch breaks, and nights, they run an adorable children’s clothing company called The Little Crane Smocked Shoppe. Follow these two, their families, and their adventures in small business ownership on their blog…and don’t forget to show them some love at their shop too!

  1. I LOVE the idea of mismatched patterns and fun colors!!! I am so excited to take our holiday pictures. Like seriously! Also, love y’all’s Christmas cards from last year!

  2. I’m OBSESSING and STRESSING now over our shoot—thanks, guys! HAHA! Mia’s dress is picked—now it’s working around her outfit 🙂 We’re going for a neutral pallet this year with a bit of BLACK pop! 🙂 xo

  3. I’ve already started stressing over this! I’m thinking fun patterns on the girl and coordinating colors on me and the hubby!

  4. Okay, so we took our family pics last week…and we went with a mix of earth tones and a few little pops of color (Hadley wore yellow leggings and Hayes had an orange plaid shirt). This may sound drab to most, but for me it was a HUGE step! Because we always stick to neutrals – navy, olive green, khaki, cream… Maybe next year we will go with neons. Ha-ha…I kid, I kid.
