A Houston Mom’s Guide to August

Time to finish checking off those bucket lists, friends! August is here and soon school will be back in session. Some of you may be exclaiming with glee while others are mourning a summer that has passed all too quickly. But never fear, there is plenty still to do in our great city. Let’s go make some memories and wrap up “summer” with all things festivals, sticky treats, lazy Saturdays, and everything in between.

This month we are absolutely thrilled to be partnering together with Vivaldi Music Academy as we start thinking about back-to-school activities. August 1st – 31st :: Houston Restaurant Weeks

It’s one of Houston’s most beloved weeks of the year… An opportunity to try out some of the most delectable restaurants in our area, all in support of a great cause. With proceeds benefiting Houston Food Bank, you can sample everything from brunch to dinner, mostly at price-fixed menu options. August 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th, & 31st | 5 – 7pm :: Free Immunizations at Children’s Museum of Houston + Texas Children’s Hospital

In partnership with Children’s Museum of Houston, TCH’s Mobile Clinic will offer free back-to-school vaccinations for the first 150 participants at Thursday Free Family Night. There is no need to pre-register, however, you will need to have your child’s immunization records on hand.

August 4th – 6th | 9am – 7pm :: Kid to Kid Back to School Sale

Back to school shopping is no joke, y’all! That’s why we love catching some great sales over at HMB and this Kid to Kid one is no exception. This Friday through Sunday take an additional 25% off all pre-owned shoes and clothes.

August 4th – 6th | {check website for times} :: Houston International Jazz Festival

Jazz will fill the air in Downtown Houston as the 27th Annual Houston International Jazz Festival kicks off August Jazz Month. The festival presents the most exciting Jazz artists from around the world, bringing a diverse mix of styles to Houston, and enjoy the Battle of The Brass Bands and the SJW All-stars.

August 5th | 9am – Noon :: Kids Fishing Derby – Brazoria County

Is there any better way to spend a summer morning than fishing with the fam bam? Grab your rods ‘n reels and head out to Quintana Beach City Park in Brazoria County to learn the fun and safe ways to fish. Following you’ll be able to participate in a fishing tourney, with prizes awarded for biggest fish among others.

August 5th | 10am :: 8-Bit Challenge at Children’s Museum of Houston {Arcade Games of the 80s!}

The Children’s Museum of Houston makes a retro throwback to activities celebrating the third generation of computer and video games commonly known as 8-bit technology.  Whether you are a seasoned-pro or gaming newbie, you are guaranteed to have a blast experiencing the technology that became a game changer.  Bring out our competitive side as you enter to win a mystery grand prize box by completing the stations and collecting stamps.

August 5th | 10:30am – 2:30pm :: Back to School Splash Bash in Sugar Land Town Square

Hard to believe, but yes, it’s time for back to school. So why not live it up one last weekend? Hit up the square in Sugar Land for free waterslides, live music and a DJ, hula hoop contests, and of course, food and drinks. We love that they are supporting Fort Bend Rainbow Room by having all attendees donate backpacks and/or school supplies too!

August 5th | 2pm – Midnight :: Beyond the Pines Music Fest

Back for the second year, this year’s Beyond the Pines promises to be bigger and better than ever! Set at Sam Houston Race Park, prepare to be entertained all day long with an epic line up, including multi-award winner Ryan Bingham. Check out delicious food and adult beverages and get ready to rock. Grab your tickets here.

August 5th | 6pm – 2am :: White Linen Night in the Heights

Join in for The Heights most epic pub crawl! This event is a great one to grab a sitter and go all out with party bus in tow bringing you safely to all of the hot spots. Of course, as the name would suggest, participants wear all white while celebrating the end of summer in style. Buy your tickets here!

August 6th | Noon – 5pm :: National Root Beer Float Day at Saint Arnold

There’s a day for everything it seems, and National Root Beer Float Day is no exception! My friends, Saint Arnold may be a fabulous connoisseur for all things beer, but their root beer is a treasure to behold. Add a generous scoop of local favorite Fat Cat Creamery Mexican Vanilla ice cream, and you are on your way to flavor town. Even better? All floats will be served in souvenir cups {while supplies last} and kid-friendly meal options are available until 4pm.

August 8th | 8:30pm :: Movies at Miller with Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone

Before school begins, head out for a fun mid-week treat for this classic showing of the first installment of the Harry Potter series. As a little mom hack, we recommend reading a few chapters of the book before heading out! This event is non-ticketed, and as always, open seating on the hill.

August 12th | 8am – Noon :: Peach Tree Farmers Market 1K Taco Run

There are few things that we love better than TACOS and Farmer’s Markets. To kick off the beginning of their season, Peach Tree Farmer’s Market in Angleton is offering up a free 1K run/walk to tacos, along with their sponsors, Saint Arnold and Chameleon Cold Brew. Race ya there?

August 11th | 1 – 4pm :: Trekkies vs Star Wars at The Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Center

Calling all Star Trek and Star Wars fans!  It’s highly illogical, but the Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Center is boldly going where no man has gone before.  Galaxies will collide when Star Trek and Star Wars fans face off at the ultimate throw down.  You’re invited to dress up, team up with your favorite side, and become part of this intergalactic saga during a fan celebration.  Resistance is futile.  Live long and prosper and may the force be with you!

August 12th | 10am – 1pm :: Catch a Sneak Peek at Children’s Learning Adventure

If you’ve been to a Children’s Learning Adventure event before, then you know that it’s always TONS of fun! At all 10 Houston-area locations, children will be able to explore their state of the art facility with this FREE event.   Throughout the campus, your kiddos can expect to find bowling, dancing, basketball, cooking activities, music, crafts, snacks, and more. Plus, it will give you an opportunity to learn all about their preschool and afterschool programming and what makes their options so unique.  Just in time for the fall, so be sure to RSVP here!

August 12th | 10am – 7:30pm :: Texas Black Women’s Expo

This year’s theme is “Hotter Than Summer” and with an expected crowd of 20,000+ and hundreds of vendors in the works at NRG, it certainly promises to live up to the name. Look for fun, shopping, education, and fashion at this all-inclusive event. Don’t miss out on the over 20 seminars presented by local and national speakers and leaders from all over the country.

August 12th | 4pm – 10pm :: Katy Summer Tailgate 

Celebrating back to school for an amazing cause! Enjoy live music, plenty of good eats and drinks, an epic Kids Zone, vendors, and more. School supplies and backpacks will be collected as well as other community donations all to benefit Katy-area YMCA’s Operation Backpack. Special VIP tickets available here.

August 12th | 4pm – 10pm :: Southern Fried Chicken Fest

Celebrating Houston’s number one consumed fried dish, the Southern Fried Chicken Fest will showcase the best of this beloved meal with restaurants, food trucks, and concessionaires. This family friendly event will have arts & crafts, a watermelon eating contest, chicken wing eating contest, and more. Children under the age of 8 are free, and you can get your tickets here.

August 19th | 10am :: Free Kids Festival- Kingwood

Celebrate the end of summer with this completely FREE Kiddo Fest at Kingwood’s Town Center. Your family will enjoy everything from children’s performers, pony rides, petting zoo, special character appearances, and much more. And of course, all of that energy burning deserves delish food. Check out the over 100 vendors that will line the streets and all of the attractions before you go!

August 19th | Noon – 10pm :: 2017 Houston Food Fest

Foodies unite! You won’t want to miss this year’s culinary spectacle that is the Houston Food Fest. With over 50 vendors representing all the diverse culture that makes up the Houston food landscape, you will not walk away hungry. Tickets are just $10 at the gate, and children are FREE!

August 19th | 7:30 – 9:30pm :: Sugar Land Superstar Finale

For 11 years, Sugar Land Town Square has hosted it’s American Idol-like Superstar Finale and it returns in a showstopping way this year! Grab a bite to eat on the square, then head out with your blankets and lawn chairs to enjoy the best of the Sugar Land singing talent.

August 26th | 11:30am – 6:30pm :: Tomball Texas Music Festival

Texas music fans – you will LOVE this event with our neighbors to the north. This event is completely FREE and offers toe-tapping tunes, food vendors, a huge Kids Zone, and more.

August 26th | Noon – 8pm :: 6th Annual Pearland Food & Wine Festival

Celebrate Wine and Food! The 6th Annual Pearland Wine and Food Festival by Dionisio Winery will take place in the Pearland Town Center Pavilion featuring one day of Texas-based wineries showcasing red, white, and fruit wines along with local food and music. Wine and food enthusiasts are invited to attend this Texas-style event featuring award-winning wines, local foods, shop vendors, and more! Tickets start at $30 and are available to our friends 21 and up here.

August 26th | 7pm  :: Parent’s Night Out at the Houston Zoo

Need a night out while ensuring your kids have an unforgettable experience? Drop your kiddos off at the Houston Zoo for a flurry of fun activities, close up meet ‘n greets with your favorite animals and scaly friends, and exploring the Zoo after dark. Dinner and a snack will be served. Please register in advance here.

August 31st | 7pm :: Texans vs Cowboys at NRG Stadium

Y’all. It’s finally here. The start of everything fall and the kickoff of FOOTBALL season. And who could miss this epic rivalry of the game? Whether you come for the tailgating, the food, the drinks, the atmosphere, or the actual game, this is a win-win no matter which side of the coin you fall on. But seriously, BULLS ON PARADE.

Meagan Clanahan
Meagan is a Dallas native who has lived in the Katy area for over a decade. She kicked a soccer ball all the way to Louisiana to attend college at her family’s alma mater of LSU, where she promptly fell in love with a Texas Aggie in Baton Rouge for an internship. After swimming back to Texas following Hurricane Katrina, Matt and Meagan fell in love with the Houston area and now couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. Following several years of infertility, their miracle twins Ryan and Quinn were born in June of 2010.
