Kid-Approved Valentine’s Day Crafts

Kid-Approved Valentine's Day Crafts | Houston Moms Blog

As commercialized as some people think Valentine’s Day is, I have to admit that I absolutely love this Hallmark-inspired holiday. The overload of pink, the conversation hearts, and the overpriced roses make my heart flutter. Yes, I am a complete sucker for all things Valentine’s Day.

Due to my overindulgence in all things Valentine’s related, I bribed convinced my boys to partake in some seasonal crafts with me. I cherish their sweet little works of preschool art and finger paintings and wanted to share a few ideas with you! I hope you and your littles enjoy making some of these crafts too…

These were hands-down my boys’ favorite thing to make in my Valentine craft round-up … probably because they involve the word “bug” and were fun to play with. It’s the little things!

Supplies ::

  • Toilet paper roll
  • Paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Googly eyes
  • Pom-pom balls
  • Pipe cleaner

Directions ::

  1. Have your child paint the toilet paper roll any colorKid-Approved Valentine's Day Crafts | Houston Moms Blog
  2. {For adults} Hot glue their choice of pom-pom balls onto the top of the toilet paper roll, followed by the googly eyes.
  3. {Also for adults!} Bend the pipe cleaner in half and tape or hot glue it to the top of the bug’s head.  Your bug is ready to go!

>> Shake Paint Picture Frames <<Kid-Approved Valentine's Day Crafts | Houston Moms Blog

Apparently shake painting is a thing, and I am the last to know. We tried it, and my kids had fun with it. Just like this activity promises, it kept the mess to a minimum. We shake painted hearts and then stuck them onto kid-painted, wooden picture frames. {Mine were from the dollar section at Michael’s – score!}

Supplies ::

  • Wooden picture frame
  • Paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Airtight container

Directions ::

  1. Have your child paint the picture frame. Set it aside to dry.
  2. Have your child trace heart shapes onto construction paper and cut them out. Depending on your child’s age, you may need to help them. Cut out about 10 hearts per frame in a variety of sizes.
  3. Put about one tablespoon of paint into your container. You can use multiple colors, or just one color. Go easy on how much paint you use though — it doesn’t require much. After putting in the paint, then drop in your heart cut-outs.
  4. Seal your container, hand it over to your child and let the shaking begin!
  5. Remove the hearts from the container and adhere them to the paint. {Helpful Hint :: the paint from the hearts works as an adhesive to attach the hearts to your frame.}Kid-Approved Valentine's Day Crafts | Houston Moms Blog
  6. Place a picture in the frame and you’ve got a cute Valentine’s Day craft. This is a great gift for a grandparent or special teacher!

>> LOVE Fingerprint Canvas <<Kid-Approved Valentine's Day Crafts | Houston Moms Blog

I love the way this craft turned out, but it was honestly a TON of work. My kids weren’t super interested in the finger painting, and you have to be pretty meticulous about following the pattern or it turns out all wonky.

Supplies ::

  • Blank canvas
  • Cardboard
  • L-O-V-E pattern
  • Paint, stamp pad, or washable markers

Directions ::

  1. Using Microsoft Word, print and cut out the letters L-O-V-E. {You can use a heart symbol for the “O.”} This takes a bit of trial and error to figure out the right size for your canvas. I used an 11 x 17 canvas, but you can use any size that works for you.
  2. Tape the paper letters onto cardboard and cut out the cardboard. An exacto knife will help this go quickly!
  3. Tape the cardboard letters onto the canvas and arrange it to your liking.
  4. It’s time for the kiddos to get in on the fun! Using their fingers, have them make their fingerprints all over the canvas. In order for it to look like it actually spells out something, the kids will need to make sure and outline the letters with their fingerprints. You can use paint, stamp pads, or markers for this. I found paints to be too messy, so we varied between stamp pads and markers. It’s up to you!Kid-Approved Valentine's Day Crafts | Houston Moms Blog
  5. Remove the cardboard letters and your masterpiece is complete!

Hopefully you’ve gotten some ideas for crafts you can make with your littles this Valentine’s season. Let them make a mess and have fun with it — their handmade creations are the ones you’ll always cherish!
