Why You Should Clean Out Your Closets this Month {…and how to make money doing it!}

If you’re like me, then cleaning means just putting stuff in less obvious places.  My living room might be spotless, but the closet in my hallway, well, it could compete with a closet straight from Hoarders.  Old Halloween costumes that I just can’t seem to part with because they remind me of sweet memories or because one day I swear they’ll want to wear them again.  My wedding RSVPs.  All 200 of them.  From 2006.  I’m telling you — the struggle is real.

But this fall, I am enlisting the help of my handsome husband {because it was really his idea in the first place so by default he has to help, right?}, and we will be cleaning out closets once and for all.  Here’s why…

winter is coming.

I think it’s safe to say that we can finally pack away the tank tops, shorts, and the rest of our summer clothes and sandals. It seems like cooler temps are here, and it’s time to make room in the closet for winter coats, vests, and layers. That makes now a great time to clean out those items that don’t fit now, won’t fit by next summer, or those items that were just so well-loved that they won’t survive until the temps heat up again

’tis the season for receiving.

The holiday season is almost upon us.  Kids will undoubtedly be getting new gifts, new clothes, new toys.  I swear a grandparent’s gift criteria consists of how big and how loud said gift is. The bigger the better, right!? I don’t know about you, but we simply don’t have enough space for more gifts this year.  So in preparation to receive, my husband and I have scheduled in a day on the calendar where we will send the kids away, go through two closets and four rooms cluttered with toys, and set aside toys or games that our kids don’t play with anymore.

to make money.

Who doesn’t need or want some extra moolah this holiday season?!  Thanks to our sponsors at VarageSale it’s easy to remove items from your home — items that you no longer need or use —  and place them in a new home where they’ll continue to be put to good use and be well-loved. Plus, they have a very cool money-making incentive going on right now. Seriously, you can earn as much as $125 just for listing your items on VarageSale right now! More about that below. Email Header

VarageSale was founded by a former elementary teacher, Tami Zuckerman in 2012 after she became frustrated using other sites to buy and sell online. She approached her husband, a programmer, and the two collaborated together to create something more user friendly with a better experience than existing classifieds sites or social networks.

VarageSale is a platform to buy and sell new and gently used items within your local community. Being built around trust and real identities, VarageSale has resonated well with people all across the US, especially moms. They have hundreds of local communities across 42 states and millions of users.   Because VarageSale categorizes their uses based on their general vicinity, it is super convenient to buy and sell close by without driving all around this massive city.  This is key for a city as large as Houston!  As an added bonus, it’s a nice and organic way to meet and get to know your neighbors.

’tis the season for buying…

… so why not save money while doing it? If they haven’t started already, your kiddos will be mentioning and forming their holiday and Christmas wish lists.  I’ve already started asking my kids, and topping off my son’s list for the third year in a row are trains.  A quick peek around VarageSale’s Inner Loop Houston community shows that there are a couple Thomas the Train pieces for sale at a fraction of the retail price — one unopened in its original box.

Looking for Local Deals - FBVarageSale couldn’t be easier to use.  It’s free to join and it’s available on iOS, Android, and online here.  The app uses location technology to sort the newsfeed based on what’s closest to you. The more people posting and shopping within a community, the more local your experience will be. You can also customize your VarageSale newsfeed so that only the categories and items you care about will show up!  Here’s how.

I love that VarageSale is moderated by local admins.  I also love that we can shop with confidence by browsing member profiles and seeing real names plus photos which have been vetted by the admins. Safety is key when shopping online, and VarageSale provides that.

We’re excited to announce that VarageSale is hitting Houston hard and heavy this fall and just in time for the holiday season.  They are launching many new VarageSale communities in Houston, on top of the many existing communities they already have.  And four of these just went live yesterday!   Clickable links below.
