Holidays of Helping :: Ways To Give Back

We really try to teach our kids about helping other people and giving back to our community. Our girls know about donating old toys, bringing meals to families and making cards for our loved ones. {I mean, we are not perfect – but we try.} And while we are just at the beginning of the holiday season madness, now is a great time to plan out what you can do to help teach your kids about giving back and volunteer in Houston.

Volunteer in Houston

Organizations

  • Star of Hope :: The Star of Hope homeless shelter is always in need of fresh clothing, blankets, and food, and during the holidays you can volunteer to serve meals to the homeless.
  • Toys for Tots :: Become a volunteer or find a toy donation drop site near you.
  • Habitat for Humanity :: Help build a house! The build schedule is Tuesday – Saturday from 7:30am until 2pm. Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age or older and at least 18 to use power tools. Don’t worry about the lack of skill you think you have, they will teach you!
  • Houston Food Bank :: Various opportunities are available to volunteer at their two locations.   Minimum age varies per the assignment, but some opportunities are appropriate for volunteers as young as 8.
  • A Mother’s Sanctuary :: A Mother’s Sanctuary is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide a safe environment for women who are suffering from perinatal and postpartum mental health issues. Volunteers are needed to help with outreach, support groups, and even a phone call line.
  • Citizens for Animal Protection :: Love pets? Think about collecting food, toys, or other needs for a local pet shelter. CAPS has a “wish list” of items on its website and also has volunteer sign up information.
  • Meals on Wheels :: Make homemade cards to go with food deliveries through the holidays. You could even have a fun “make a card” party for the kids.
  • Ronald McDonald House :: Help make holiday meals, donate food, or plan activities for people who are staying at the Ronald McDonald House.
  • Check out other organizations like Little LightsLittle Helping Hands, and Volunteer Houston to connect with possible volunteer opportunities in town!
