10 Kid-Friendly Stops for Houston Restaurant Weeks 2017

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Well, for Houston foodies it is! Houston Restaurant Weeks runs from August 1st – September 4th. What started as just one week is now a full month where dozens of restaurants in our area offer special menus at set prices with proceeds going to the Houston Food Bank. While this is a great opportunity to enjoy a date night, it’s also a fun time to treat the whole family. We looked through the entire list of restaurants for 2017 to bring you our top picks for kid-friendly options during Houston Restaurant Weeks…

10 Kid-Friendly Stops fro Houston Restaurant Weeks | Houston Moms Blog

1} Punk’s Simple Southern Food

Punk’s is all about southern hospitality with recipes passed down through generations. You’ve got menu items such as Grandma Pat’s Crispy Buttermilk Fried Chicken and Pickled Gulf Shrimp. For the kids there are lots of fun options such as mini corn dogs, beef sliders, chicken strips, the “lunch pail” {which includes ritz crackers, cheese, and ham}, and, of course, southern mac n’ cheese! Also fun for the kids – Punk’s has popsicles from All We Need Farm.

2} The Grove

We picked The Grove as one of our top family-friendly restaurants mostly because of the location. Nestled right inside Discovery Green, The Grove is a great place to relax after running around in Houston’s biggest green space. {Yes – get the kids nice and tired so they will sit still for dinner!} Along with a playground and splash pad to enjoy, Discovery Green has movie nights, dance workshops, concerts, and other fun events throughout the summer too.

3} Prego

Located right in the heart of Rice Village, Prego is an upscale Italian restaurant with great food. They provide crayons and coloring sheets for the kids and have a kid menu featuring delicious pizza and pasta. Pop over to The Chocolate Bar nearby after dinner to enjoy a tasty treat with the family.

4} Downtown Aquarium

What? Is that Dory? Nemo!? I don’t know about you, but my kids loved the movie Finding Dory, and the idea of seeing the real life version sounds awesome! At the Downtown Aquarium you can see giant tanks of fish and other sea-life. Of course, you can also enjoy the giant ferris wheel that gives you a view of downtown and beyond. While parents can dine on the 3-course restaurant weeks meal, kids can choose from pizza, pasta, chicken tenders, burgers, and yes, fish and shrimp!

5} Hungry’s on Memorial

Hungry’s is a favorite when it comes to fresh and unique, and with the motto “Free cookie for smiling faces!” – kids are sure to love it. On the kid’s menu — grilled cheese, penne pasta with grilled chicken, cheese pizza, chicken fingers, and several other options. We like the low-key atmosphere and comfortable seating which makes it welcoming for anyone, especially those of us bringing along our littles. Hungry’s in Rice Village is also on the list! Go check out the new renovations, including a huge patio for the kids!

6} The Union Kitchen

The atmosphere at Union Kitchen is upscale, but comfortable for families. My kids love this place! The kid’s menu is out of this world and includes favorites like chicken tenders and mac ‘n’ cheese, and also specialty items like mini cheese burgers, linguine with oven roasted meatballs, and sliced grilled tenderloin medallions served with vegetables. Your kids will eat like kings! {This year all four locations are part of RW!}

7} Alamo Drafthouse Cinema – Mason Park

What do kids love most about the movies? Popcorn, of course! The Alamo Drafthouse offers bottomless popcorn with a meal purchase. Each Houston Restaurant Weeks meal purchased includes a movie ticket for later. {So you can check out some summer movies before school starts!} You can also get an adult milkshake and warm cookies with your Houston Restaurant Weeks menu selection.

8} The Melting Pot

The Melting Pot is the original fondue restaurant in our area! The kids will love the way you use little skewers to dip your food in an assortment of cheeses, chocolates, and various other dips. The Restaurant Weeks menu features loaded baked potato cheddar cheese dip, filet mignon, shrimp, and Mexican Chocolate!

9} Goode Company Armadillo Palace

This Houston classic is the home for good ole fashioned comfort food. The kids will LOVE the huge armadillo that will greet you right out front. Come on, take a selfie already!  There is often live music and plenty of room to meet up with friends. The Restaurant Weeks menu has Brazos Bend Pecan Pie… get there already! Yum!!

10} MKT Bar

We promise it’s okay to bring your baby into this “bar.” MKT Bar is walking distance from Minute Maid Park and the Toyota Center. It also adjoins Phoenicia Specialty Foods Downtown, which is a great little grocery store and cafe with additional outdoor seating. At MKT Bar kids can eat sliders with shoestring fries, mini cheese pizza, or chicken strips. The Gelato FUN cup is served in a happy clown cup – definitely an exciting way to end the meal!

During Houston Restaurant Weeks, there are different prices depending on the type of restaurant you visit. For example, at one restaurant you will pay $35 for a three-course-dinner. The restaurant will donate $5 to the Houston Food Bank for each dinner sold — which allows them to provide 15 meals from just this one donation. Wow! And yes, take the kids! These kid-friendly options will allow you to help out those in our community and enjoy some quality time with your family too.
