5 Myths About Invisalign

Houston Smiles Series Graphic{For more posts within this series, click the picture above.}

So far I have loved all of the posts in our Houston Smiles series sponsored by BLVD Dentistry!  I love talking about those sweet baby teeth that start making their appearance in the first year…I love dreaming up ways to make being the tooth fairy fun…and I even love saving money by utilizing my dental benefits each year.  But one topic I have dreaded talking about is…my own teeth.  Ugh.  They are completely crooked and just make me so self conscious every time I smile.  And while I’d love to get them fixed, I refuse to wear braces and Invsalign just seems like it wouldn’t be a good fit for me.

That is until I had some of my myths about Invisalign busted this week.

And since I’m guessing some of you probably have these same misconceptions and concerns when it comes to straightening those teeth and getting that beautiful smile that you have always wanted, I wanted to let you in on some of the things I learned too…

My teeth need too much adjusting for Invisalign.

For most cases, this is so not true!  From some mild misalignment to much more severe dental issues, the technology Invisalign uses is nothing short of amazing – and they now have the ability to handle almost ALL cases.  In fact, their latest advancement is called Precision Cuts which allows the aligners to work with elastics for bite issues.  {This mama with a little bit of an underbite is SUPER excited about that one!}

With Invisalign, it takes forever to see results.

Wrong!  You can often see improvements really quickly.  So if you have family pictures coming up or a big milestone you will be celebrating in a few months, you can start Invisalign now and more than likely be able to see a noticeable difference by then.  Plus, while the aligners are clear and practically invisible, you can even take them out for pictures if you prefer too!

Getting Invisalign is strictly for cosmetics.

This one really surprised me…  I always thought wanting straight teeth was purely cosmetic, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth.  Since I am obviously NOT a dentist, I strongly suggest getting the full details from the pros.  But basically – overcrowding or extreme spacing leads to teeth that aren’t being brushed and flossed properly.  When you take steps to help straighten your teeth, it allows for the strongest and healthiest defense against potential dental hygiene issues.  And with Invisalign, you still get to brush and floss the same way you did before treatment.  Bonus!

Invisalign is too expensive.

Nope!  A consultation with BLVD Dentistry is completely free, and the cost for Invisalign is typically similar to traditional braces.  Many dental insurance plans cover orthodontic treatment, and you can use your flexible spending account to help cover the cost too.  See – your dreams of a gorgeous smile really are attainable!

Invisalign is just for adults.

False!  Invisalign is now being offered to teens too.  And if you’re worried about your teens not being diligent about wearing their aligners…studies show that teens are actually MORE diligent about treatment than most adults are.  Who knew?!

If you’re like me, you’re probably ready to take the plunge and start finding out more.  Remember – a consultation is FREE, so there really are no risks in exploring your options…but judging from the five points above, there is so much to gain.  So take the first step and contact our friends at BLVD Dentistry.  You can easily request an appointment online, and the locations are listed below…

In March 2011, they welcomed Hayes into the world, a silly but smart little boy with a story you have to read to believe. And in April 2013, their family was complete with the addition of Hadley, a super gregarious and oh-so-cute baby girl. Now, Kelly devotes her days to caring for her own little ones…and would not trade this new job of hers for the world! In her not-so-spare time, Kelly loves meeting up with her girlfriends for margaritas, failing miserably at Pinterest projects, and exploring this big old city with her two favorite little side-kicks in tow.
