A Day In the Life of a Houston Heights Mom

I love the Heights. I have lived here for 5 years now and it just keeps getting better! The thing that I love about the Heights is that the ever-changing landscape always gives us something new to explore. Not to mention the fact that SO many things are popping up within walking distance of my home. Now that we survived Ice-aggedeon, we are soaking up our Heights Life with renewed gusto! With over 450 rated Yelp establishments and one of the highest walkability scores in all of Houston, this inner loop spot continues to thrive. I decided to check out a few new places lately and give ya’ll a glimpse on a perfect day in the life of a Heights mom!

MORNING

Breakfast :: M and I are eaters. We like food. Lucky for us there is no shortage of great places to eat in the Heights. I am particularly THRILLED that SNOOZE an A.M. Eatery opened up 3 blocks from my home. With M being an early riser, this is the perfect spot to take a morning walk and enjoy some DELICIOUS food. Bonus- my boyfriend and his daughter live on the way so we can grab them {see I’m all about the walkability, people!}. We were lucky enough to attend the soft opening and there was no shame in our game – we ordered, and we ordered hard. Pancake flights you guys {even gluten free}. A whole section of Benedicts {my favorite breakfast food!}. And the coffee. Bring me all the coffee!!! And talk about family friendly. I literally have to explain to my 3 year old why we can’t go every morning and see our Snooze friends. People that give her stickers and endless food? She’s in.

Shopping :: Need a gift for that next birthday party or to grab something unique for a teacher? Stroll one street up and east of Snooze to the eclectic 19th street strip. Heights favorites such as Jubilee {great for current clothing trends and Houston based gifts}, The Big Blue Whale {IMO the most fun toy store in Houston} and Boomtown Coffee {try the iced cappuccino!} are joined by newcomers Proper Houston {for some fresh new kicks}, We Olive and Wine Bar, and Tea Sip if coffee isn’t your thing. It’s a great way to get a walk in and support our local businesses! My daughter loves these adventures on 19th street and being involved in shopping for her friends and family! We also always enjoy our interactions with the owners and employees and the first Saturday of the month has a great Arts Market with live music, food and crafts.

Lunch:: Torchy’s Tacos is always a crowd pleaser with creative culinary tacos and a sensational queso dip. M is a fan. If you are looking for something more refined, the former Shade has been reinvented as Alice Blue -a modern bistro. It’s a great spot to grab an old world glass of wine, a light bite, and catch up with a girlfriend! Then continue the conversation with a stroll down the Heights Walk and Bike path. Bonus:: they regularly update art and sculptures on the path seasonally. We’ve taken tons of great pictures on these little walks {and my daughter loves seeing all the dogs on the path}.

AFTERNOON

Fresh cut:: Y’all. I’ve looked high and low for a hair place CLOSE to home! I have dark, insanely thick, difficult to manage hair. It’s my life struggle – low maintenance girl with high maintenance hair. Le sigh. Enter FLOWE Studio! Ok, it’s not “technically” in the Heights, but just a short jaunt on the other side of 610 in Garden Oaks. I’ve heard friends rant about this gem so I had to check it out. I walk in and instantly the song that pops in my head is “Run The World {Girls}” by Beyoncé. These are three of the hardest working team of ladies you’ll see. Jordan, the owner, is so sweet and her team of Brittany and Ericah work together on clients to knock out killer cuts, colors and customizations. I went for a cut on one visit and a color {balayage color to warm up my color for spring} on a following visit. All three worked as a team to make sure I looked great and got exactly what I needed! Plus they mix up some tasty drinks!!! SO refreshing to see them supporting each other as a team and I always respect anyone who has passion for what they do and these ladies overflow with it! I seriously loved every look that walked out. They also texted me a few days later to make sure I was completely happy. I’ve actually never had anyone do that. If you’re like me, my hair care {and self care} is usually the thing I neglect the most. So when I do get the rare chance to indulge in self care I want to enjoy it and I more than enjoyed my time with the Flowe team!

Need a hair cut place for the kiddos? Check out Austin-based Birds Barbershop in the Heights. Bonus :: beer for mom and dad during the cut and Steel City Pops next door to entice your little one to stay still!

Play Tim e:: Looking to get in a workout? Have you seen the new Heights Mercantile space? Check out the new Define Heights at this location. I recently took the DEFINE Bounce class at Memorial Green and loved it {and trust me, I’m not coordinated}. Got a kiddo with you? No problem! DEFINE also has childcare during class {so brilliant}. The best part of this DEFINE being part of the Mercantile nestles it next to other great finds :: a new Local Foods is going below it {Crunchy Chicken Sandwich for the win}, along with shopping, a creperie joint and Cloud 10 Creamery {Smore’s Sundae, I heart you}. We like to go over to Donovan Park across the street so the kiddos can run around and then come back for an ice cream treat at Cloud 10. There’s also a pop up Lululemon right next door if you are up for a browse {I won’t lie, 80% of me working out is justifying wearing Lulu}.

EVENING

Dinner :: Our current favorite is Mellow Mushroom. It’s walking distance, fun atmosphere with great indoor/outdoor seating and very kid friendly. They also have gluten free options, a solid beer selection, sensational sangria and a decent happy hour. We find everyone leaves satisfied and we never have to wait long. Pretty sure they “know” us there and it’s another reason I love the Heights – I LIKE being known places and being a regular.

Social :: Both Eureka Heights and the Heights Bier Garten are walking distance for us. I prefer Eureka Heights with the kids. It has a large open space with several games set up along with activities and crafts for kids. I love trying the local beers and the food trucks have been awesome. They also host fun, quirky trivia nights {so glad I was walking distance for Friends Trivia Night – Y’all SHOWED UP for that one! PIVOT!}. If we happen to be kid free, the Bier Garten has a great open atmosphere and a great selection of beer, wine and mixed drinks with a great happy hour!

Obviously, these aren’t things I would do in just one day {I wouldn’t fit in my Lulus and maybe be broke}, BUT these are a ton of great options for a day in the Heights and I tried to highlight the new kids on the block. Heck… the little corner shop at the end of my street that used to do furniture is going to become a Coffee and Wine Bar spot so theres a chance this may decrease me actually getting OFF my street! Either way, I love our neighborhood!

Coming soon to the Heights:: Common Bond Heights – the popular Montrose bakery will join us in the new Heights Waterworks development going on West 20th and Nicholson along with HopDoddy {Austin based burger joint} and Ripe Cuisine {famous vegan food truck!}.

Tell us what else we missed! What do you love about your neighborhood? Stay tuned as we highlight more of Houston !!!!
