Camp Olympia {Sponsored}

Spring Break has come and gone which means summer is right around the corner.  Time for swimming.  Time for vacationing.  Time to start thinking about how on earth you are going to fill your kiddo’s days for three months straight.

Which is why we are so excited to introduce you to our sponsor Camp Olympia!  I can remember summer camps as a young girl.  I LOVED going each summer, and I would count down the days until my parents would drive me up the road and drop me off for a week of fun and freedom.  So our hope in sharing this special camp with all of you is that your children will find a place to go year after year, and that they will grow up with all of the same joyous memories that so many of us did as well.  In fact, our very own Breonna went to Camp Olympia when she was growing up, and here is what she had to say about it…

When I was in 5th grade, Red Elementary got to go to Camp Olympia for a few days.  It might have just been a week, but I remember packing like I was going away for the entire summer.  I remember walking up to the cabins thinking that we were deep in the woods of some National Forest in the middle of the country.  You know – because Google Maps wasn’t a thing in 19xx.

The girls in my class were assigned to the Athena cabin.  This was infinitely awesome because everyone knows that Athena was the greatest Greek Goddess ever.  I firmly stand behind this belief even after all these years, and I know that’s why I loved Camp Olympia.  The nerd in 10 year old Breonna was very strong, and she kept pointing at things named after Greek Mythology and telling her uninterested cabin mates about it.

The most memorable part of the week was when we got to go canoeing though.  I’ve always been a city kid, and normally things like canoeing did not interest me whatsoever.  I was partnered up, and we got a little overzealous with our canoeing, and I might have ended up int he lake.  But…I did get to warm up and dry off by the fire int he cabin with a cup of hot chocolate.  We staved off daddy long legs.  We stayed up scaring the bejeezus out of each other with ghost stories.  We sang camp songs.  We did everything that kids going to camp should do.

I can’t even remember my best friends name in 5th grade, but I remember loving that week we spent at Camp Olympia.

We could probably end there, but here are a few other things we just love about Camp Olympia too…

It’s local.

We, in Houston, are so fortunate to have Camp Olympia right in our backyard.  Camp Olympia is a premiere summer camp for boys and girls aged 7-16 that is conveniently located approximately 100 miles northeast of Houston, in the Piney Woods of East Texas, right on Lake Livingston.   There’s no need to travel to the hill country or out of state to get to this little piece of paradise!  And since it’s not too far away, they encourage families to schedule a tour so they can see all the fabulous activities and amenities Camp Olympia has to offer too.

Parents are always looking for the best way for their children to spend their summers. We want our children to have fun, but also have new experiences and learn new things…away from the smart phones, TVs, and video games. Camp is the perfect place for children to get “unplugged”, discover new talents and interests, make new friends {from all over the state, country, and world!}, and learn more about themselves – becoming more confident and responsible in the process. Camp really is a valuable key to a child’s well-rounded education, and who knows…they may even sweep and make their beds after being away at camp too!

But of course, we want our kids to be safe. Camp Olympia has an award-winning safety record and compliance with the American Camping Association {ACA} accreditation standards.  Plus, their experienced leaders, directors Tommy and Kathy Ferguson, have led Camp Olympia for over 40 years.  They have a dynamic group of college age counselors to serve as positive role models and strive to keep a counselor to camper ratio of 1:4 in each cabin.

Children see all of the fun activities at Olympia and want to attend. With over 40 activity choices, there really is something for everyone! Sports, water fun, visual arts, horseback riding, outdoor adventures, golf, nightly programs, the list goes on…and on…and on.

It’s family friendly.

Camp Olympia offers special weekends throughout the year with family in mind. Each year they have Family Camp Weekend – that just took place in March.  The last weekend in September they offer a Mother/Daughter Weekend {Sept. 26th-28th}, and their annual Father/Son Weekend will be next January {date to be determined}.   Since my children aren’t quite camp age yet, I think those may serve as unique opportunities for our family of four until I am able to pack them up and send them off all by themselves.  Tear!

It’s focused on community.

Camp Olympia also serves as a retreat facility during the school year and can accommodate large groups for a weekend retreat.  Think school groups, church groups, or scout groups!
