If you are looking for a fun family day, look no further than historic Rosenberg, down 59 South. I know for some inner loopers, Rosenberg sounds like the other side of Texas but truly it’s just a straight shot just past Sugar Land! Now that spring is finally here, we are looking for things to check out that get us out of the house and into some major family fun! Growing up in the Rosenberg area provided for a very special childhood with priceless memories. My sister and I played softball at Sunset Park, went with our grandfather to get sno-cones at Bob’s, and enjoyed the music at the Fort Bend County Rodeo. As a mom, I love going to Rosenberg for the day with my family, checking out the Rosenberg Railroad Museum, and sharing with them the same experiences I had as a kid. And it’s not just the comfy reclining chairs at the Cinemark movie theatre that draw us there. Our perfect Rosenberg day looks like this ::
Breakfast at Bob’s Taco Station {1901 Avenue H} ::
This is a must! My family ate at Bob’s every Sunday after church. My dad’s favorite meal was the Joe’s Bowl. I love simple bean, potato, and cheese tacos. You can’t go wrong at Bob’s. Just ask Guy Fieri, who highlighted Bob’s restaurant on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives! Don’t forget to hit up the sno-cone stand for a refreshing treat as well.
Playing at the Parks ::
There are so many fun parks in Rosenberg. My kids love the new renovated park spaces downtown and Sunset Park off of Walger Avenue {where our old house is!}. They love being in the sun and burning off energy.
The Rosenberg Railroad Museum {1921 Avenue F} ::
Our absolute favorite stop on our Rosenberg day trip is the Rosenberg Railroad Museum! The Museum is open from 10am-5pm on Wednesday through Saturday and 1pm-5pm on Sundays. The park-like grounds get you up close and personal to the real train tracks {while safely protected behind a fence} and many model trains. Your children can learn about the original Rosenberg interlocking tower and there are crafts for the kids! They do tons of fun events for kids and families, like pre-school learning events, Boy Scout events, home-school classes, school field trips, and more. And if you are looking for a memorable birthday party, look no further than this unique venue. Designed with children ages 2-8 in mind, the kiddos will have a complete blast while learning at the same time…a win/win for this mama.
In fact, I just bought our tickets to Railfest 2018, taking place April 14th from 10am-5pm. I am super excited about this event. There will be live music, food trucks, model trains, a trackless train to ride, games, face-painting {My Kaitlyn said she already wants a unicorn!}, crafts, and much more. The museum will have an open house, and there will be collectibles and rare books on sale. What I especially love about this event it truly has something for the young and young at heart :: they LOVE seeing grandparents delighting in the trains as much as their children. Perfect family day for sure. {Pssssttt :: the $8 admission fee covers everything except for food/beverage/collectible purchases, so if your kiddo wants to ride on the train 5 times, it’s fair game with no additional charge.}

Shopping ::
There are tons of shopping centers and boutiques in Rosenberg. After Railfest, check out Downtown Rosenberg’s collection of antique shops, restaurants, spas, gourmet shops, and other unique shops. Many stores in this area have been impressively renovated thanks to the Downtown Project and the Rosenberg Main Street Program. Brazos Town Center is also full of popular retailers to complete your shopping check-lists.
Lunch/Dinner- Another Time Soda Fountain & Café {800 3rd St} or Sandy McGee’s {314 Morton St, Richmond} ::
Both of these places are family favorites. My kids love the milkshakes and fries {yes, together. Don’t judge!} at Another Time Soda Fountain. My husband loves the burgers and I could tear into a plate of those onion rings right now! It reminds my brother of when my grandfather took him to a similar soda shop in downtown Rosenberg as a child. Sandy McGee’s is another favorite. While my husband loves this place, this is a girls-only tradition for us. My mom would take us to the former Rosenberg house location the day before school started every year after school clothes shopping and now we take my girls. {Insider tip :: get the broccoli cheese soup and thank me later.}
This town has come a long way since my grandmother, Bernice Kelly, owned Kelly’s Fine Fabrics downtown and since my grandfather, Robert Kelly, was a shop teacher and bus driver for Lamar Consolidated ISD. Our entire family grew up in LCISD, so seeing the positive changes to the shared history Rosenberg families have is very exciting. It’s worth a trip outside the loop for your kids to see a unique historic town right in their own backyard. Rosenberg is growing, y’all, yet still has the same historic charm it always has had.
