Exercise…because YOU MATTER, Mom.

Exercise.  Let’s face it, we use the “mom” excuses all the time.

“I have kids.”

“I’m too busy.”

“I’m too tired.”

“I don’t have the money for a gym membership.”

“I’ll be able to exercise when my kids are older.”

“My kids need me.”

“I have to get my kids to practice.”

“I don’t have time.”

They are all valid.  I won’t argue with any of them.  We just can’t use them as excuses to let something as precious as our health get away from us.  We ARE moms.  Little people DO need us.  But that in itself, is reason enough for us to get our rear in gear and take the time to take care of ourselves.  And yes, in my opinion…that involves REGULAR exercise.

No matter what stage of life you’re in, no matter your age {I say that as an “older” mom of littles at 39}, no matter your kids’ ages, you CAN get this done.  I promise.

Here’s a few tips that have helped me ::

1. Get up earlier than your kids.  It’s the best time for me to ‘git her done.’  Have your workout plan in place, whether it be a run, your favorite workout DVD, a Pinterest workout, exercises on your driveway with intermittent runs up and down your street, an exercise app…WHATEVER.  Do it.  Exercise is always easier without little ones around.  But if you’re not an early riser or it just doesn’t happen some mornings….

2.  Exercise where your kids are!

Are you one that takes your kids to the park during the day or after work {or even your own backyard}?  Follow them around and make use of their play space without taking your eyes off of them.  It’s amazing all the exercises you can do on a playground!  It’s a win/win!

Are you a momma who spends lots of time at your kids’ weekly practices?  Usually you are nearby – if not ON – a field, track, or parking lot that you can make use of!  It can be a walk/run or specific exercises to get your heart rate up and strengthen/tone!

Either way…your kids are watching.  My 2 and 3 year olds usually stop what they’re doing and want to do a version of what I’m doing.  And I can remember many little league football practices with my step-son who is now WAY past that age, where his teammates would be saying…”Whoooaaa, dude!  How many more laps is your mom gonna run?” Hahaha.  Little eyes are watching you, momma.

3.  It doesn’t have to be “all or nothing!”  I can’t tell you the number of times that I’ve had to stop a DVD or workout because a baby was crying, someone needed something to eat or drink, a potty-training booty needed wiping, a diaper disaster happened, or my babies JUST WANTED MOMMY TO PLAY WITH THEM {who’s gonna say no to that?!}.  And we all know that a well-planned workout can also be cut short by an unexpected, extra-early riser or a non-napper during nap time or a million other things.  But IT’S OKAY.  Something is better than nothing.

Just remember…

You’re a REALLY IMPORTANT PERSON to SOME REALLY SPECIAL PEOPLE.

You matter.  Treat yourself as if you believe it and take care of you.

    Great reminders Misty! I so need to be told that it doesn’t have to be all or nothing…nothing being what I usually chose!
