Free Fun at the Library

Library Collage 1

As a stay at home mom, I am thankful for all the time I have at home with my children. But I also can’t just stay at home all day long. There are only so many hours I can spend sitting on the floor playing with toys with my toddler. And I know she gets bored playing with the same things all day too. I try to get out of the house often to give us both a change of scenery. I know there are all sorts of classes and activities I could sign her up for, but there are also plenty of free things to do that are just as much fun.

One of my favorite places to take my toddler is to the library. We have one right by our house so we go there frequently. We usually have a stack of library books checked out and continually get new ones as we return them. She loves books, so it is great to continually have a variety of new books without having to pay for them. I have also checked out CD’s of kids songs to play in the car and kids DVD’s to play at home. Although after we listened to “The Wheels on the Bus” song approximately 15,000 times in the car, I decided we were no longer going to check out kids CD’s…at least for a while!

I love that our library has weekly story time for babies and kids. We have gone to story time so many times over the past 2 years. It is nice to interact with other moms, and it is fun and entertaining for the kids. It also helps the kids work on following instructions and sitting attentively. Usually after story time we stay awhile, and I let my daughter play with the puzzles. She loves doing this and would probably stay for hours and hours if I let her.

Did you know that Houston has more than 40 public libraries? You can view the different weekly events at each location. Many of the libraries offer baby/toddler story times, baby/toddler yoga, after school zone for kids, and other activities. The library near us even had a number of special events over the summer including a bubble show and a petting zoo.

  1. First of all, little Miss C is just SO precious!! I think her and K would be great friends. Over the summer, I took K to the library all the time! They had toddler story time once a week, too, and she LOVED it. It’s a great way to get out, and since we live so close, we could actually walk to it (although the summer months weren’t exactly the best time to walk to the library).

  2. Both of my kiddos adore going to the library, so we try to go to story time as much as we possibly can. They sing, they dance, they read – it is an entire morning of fun for free! And for those of you in the southwest part of Houston like me, here is more info on the Fort Bend County Libraries…
