Houston Moms "Friday Favorites:: A Weekly Glance at Our Favorite Things" #houstonmoms #houstonmomsblog #momsaroundhouston

It’s mid-January 2021, and life continues to center around the simple pleasures of home and what we can enjoy by being mostly socially-distanced from one another. I’m so thankful for modern technology that connects us to people all over the world, shopping from our finger tips, and books and other entertainment we can acquire without leaving the house. Here are a few things making me happy right now::

Following

I’ve been following Sharon McMahon of @sharonsaysso on Instagram since October, and have been delighted to see her following explode. A former high school government teacher, she is now America’s Government teacher, using those skills online, educating America on all things government, raising over $120k for people in need, and starting a #factrevolution. She is completely non-partisan and hilariously funny. A must-follow.

Wearing

We are now 300+ days into this pandemic, and I can’t say I have any inclination to wear anything but soft pants for the rest of my days. I’m a big fan of the Amazon Essentials line, and I found these joggers that are super soft, true to size, and are less than $25. I have them in dark grey and black, and am contemplating ordering a third pair.

Writing

I don’t write a lot of things by hand anymore, but when I do, I like to have a satisfying writing experience. I bought a few different {inexpensive} pens a few months ago, and settled on the Paper Mate Flair felt tip medium point pen as my favorite. These pens have been around for a long time, but write so well and make me want to write all the things {calendar dates! grocery lists! reminder notes!} The pen glides easily on the page, and the ink dries quickly so it doesn’t smudge. I love these pens- and hide them from my children!

Listening/Reading

I listen to a ton of audiobooks, and people always ask me where I get them from. I do have a subscription to Audible, but I never buy an audiobook without first checking my Libby app to see if it’s available from the library. With Libby, you can borrow both audiobooks and e-books, and you check them out on your library card, just like you would a physical book. The app is user friendly, and you can use more than one library card to borrow books. Audiobooks are such a great way to multitask while reading, and therefore make it possible to consume a lot more books.

Drinking

We all have our “things” we discovered during the pandemic, and mine is Topo Chico. This sparkling water is super bubbly, tastes great, and I congratulate myself for finding a “healthy” alternative to Diet Coke, my first love, every time I drink one. Plus, there’s something about drinking from a glass bottle that makes this beverage extra satisfying.

Elizabeth Baker
Elizabeth was raised in Houston and met her husband Ryan shortly after graduating from Texas A&M with a journalism degree. A few years later, Grayson {Sept 2010}, turned Elizabeth’s world upside down, not only with his sparkling blue eyes and killer smile, but with his profound disabilities and diagnosis of Mitochondrial Disease. After two years of navigating the world of special needs parenting, Elizabeth and Ryan were blessed with Charlotte {Jan 2013} and Nolan {Sept 2015}, perfectly completing their party of five. Elizabeth and her crew live in Katy, and when she can steal a few moments for herself, she can be found out for Mexican food and margaritas with girlfriends, binge-listening to podcasts and audiobooks, or trying once again {unsuccessfully} to organize her closet. In addition to her role as Managing Editor of HMB, Elizabeth writes about faith, politics and special needs parenting for publications like Scary Mommy and HuffPost. You can connect with Elizabeth on Facebook,Twitter, Instagram, or ElizabethKBaker.com
