I’ve Got 99 Problems, But Braiding Hair Ain’t One

Y’all, I don’t necessarily get down with this whole “boy mom/girl mom” business.  And while I did write a post about making the best of being a boy mom, I think we are all just moms. And having a certain gender kid doesn’t define our motherhood. That being said, I’ve come to realize that there are some really great things about having all boys.  So since Mandy shared her favorite things about being a girl mom yesterday, I’m now sharing 5 reasons I am particularly grateful to throw on the figurative boy mom hat each day too.

Grateful to be a Boy Mom

“Get in the car, and pee in this water bottle.”

While boys have their own issues {let’s say somehow managing to miss the entire toilet bowl}, they do come with a certain bathroom stance that’s convenient for an interrupting bathroom need, especially when a bathroom isn’t near. This trick can be quite useful during potty training, but also on road trips, park visits, and during soccer games. Let’s just say we will be keeping three empty water bottles in the car in the future to go along with these other mom hacks.

Dress For Less

There’s the obvious… Boys require fewer items, and therefore we save money on the bow, headband, jewelry, scarves, tights, leggings, matching shoes game. But there’s also less stress to the getting dressed, for the most part. While the five-year-old is getting picky {and by picky I mean wants to wear athletic shorts for all occasions}, his basic requirements are shirt and pants or shorts. Graphic tees for casual days and polos for dressier ones. Done.

And with clothes all sorted out, we can move on to shoes and that money-saving thing. Boys don’t need the number of shoes girls do. They can survive with a pair of Crocs {or other slip-on shoe} and tennis shoes. Sure, throw in a pair of brown dressier shoes for church if you want. But while girl moms have to worry about picking shoes for picture day outfits that will also work with PE, I can simply send the kids in tennis shoes. I don’t need to print out a schedule for PE days to hang when choosing outfits or bringing alternative shoes.  Less stuff, fewer shoes, limited options. Wardrobe winning.

Who Is Elsa & Why Do You Need Her Braid?

Okay, so I’m very familiar with Elsa and her heroic sister Anna. We do own Frozen; unfortunately, it never makes the final cut of which movie we are watching. What I also know is that I can’t imagine checking one more item off the “get dressed” list before school, or church, or a play date, or a soccer game, or a dinner out, or anything. You mommas that do hair are rockstars, I tell ya! The thought of three hairdos before leaving the house makes me want to put my feet up already.

Mani/Pedi – Not a Problem

A good friend had to derail her two-year-old’s tantrum after telling her daughter that Daddy was putting her to bed and Mom was going to get a pedicure with friends.  I don’t have to worry that my three will want to hop into the car for that trip any time soon.

I’m Their Mom

Because I’m a “boy mom,” I’m their mom. And for this I am eternally grateful. If they ever decide to grow and style their hair each morning, or decide to become a fashionista and need more clothing, or want to get a pedicure with me {after all, who doesn’t love a good foot massage?}, I am gifted with being the person who walks alongside them on their childhood journey, “boy mom” hat and all.

  1. I am a mom of a 15 year old, easy to please boy. We lived in a world where drama, attitude, melt downs and frilly things were non existent. I would laugh and roll my eyes when my friends daughters acted up.
I now apologize daily and beg for advice. Our daughter is now 3 and I’m questioning my sanity at least once a week. This morning the world stopped and I spent 5 min consoling my toddler because she couldn’t find the cat. It hid when she attempted to put bows in its fur.
My friends now laugh at me. ?
