The Easiest {and Cutest} DIY Christmas Projects

I am so NOT a crafty person.  I run in the other direction when someone says those three letters :: D-I-Y {do it yourself}.  Typically, I would rather D-I-E.

But today I’m bringing you not one, but two super easy and super cute DIY Christmas projects along with their retail twin in case you just don’t have the time.  I will say that both projects are cheap, easy, and quick.  I did both of these while the baby was asleep, and I was watching quality television on Bravo like VanderPump Rules and The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills {and stuffing my face with holiday M&M’s to get in the holiday spirit}.

Oh, and guess what – over on the Houston Moms Blog Facebook page, we have an awesome giveaway related to this post going on today only too!

Project #1 – Holiday Card Display

One of my favorite things about the holiday season is receiving Christmas cards in the mail from friends and family.  A few years ago, I wanted to find a fun way to display all of the cards I received in my house, but I didn’t have any extra money to spend on the wire card holder from Pottery Barn that I had seen at some of my friends’ homes.  I came up with this very simple card display for under $30.  This is my third year to do this, and I’ve used the exact same supplies every year!  Talk about a cheap project.

Items Needed ::

  • Ribbon – 6 feet {or any length you desire}.  I suggest a sturdy ribbon since you will be pinning cards to it.  I used this Harlequin Ribbon which has lasted for 3 years!
  • 1 Bow
  • Straight Pins
  • Mounting tape

supplies

Instructions ::

  • Use the mounting tape to hang the ribbon on your wall or door
  • Use the mounting tape to add the bow at the top
  • Use the straight pins to arrange your cards along your ribbon as you receive them

Retail alternative can be found at Pottery Barn for $49.00.

Project #2 – Advent Calendar

Items Needed ::

A great way to bring the true meaning of Christmas back into focus is through the use of an Advent Calendar.  This is a family tradition in my household {and a great reminder of how many shopping days are left, lol}.  Although my seven month old is too young to appreciate the reason for the season, this is a great tradition to get started for him and has been an excuse for me to get a little crafty with this fabulous DIY Advent Calendar from Olivia June Designs.  The calendar also comes with corresponding scripture and advent activities, so it really is perfect for any age.  It will look great in any room of the house like your kitchen or mantle, but I used it to bring some Christmas cheer to the nursery.

  • Printable DIY Advent Calendar Downloadble PDF from Oliva June Designs
  • Cardstock – if printing yourself, or you can get it printed at an office supply store for under $10.00
  • Scissors
  • Tape – I used Christmas Washi tape from Target
  • Twine
  • Clothespins – any will do, but I found some colorful ones at Target this week that match perfectly!

    Those projects are just awesome!! I started putting up red and white twine and clipping with mini clothespins to hang up cards, but the ribbon is way cuter!
