Home Workout Tips for Moms on a Budget

Do you hate paying for a monthly gym membership? Do you have an interest to work out at home, but have no idea where to start? After having kids and I was able to stay at home with them, I had to get creative on ways to get in shape and get my workouts in at home without breaking the bank on a gym membership that I may or may not find the time to use. After years of working out at home, I still struggle sometimes to find the motivation to work out and get in a rut of keeping my workouts interesting, but I love working out under my own terms.

Yes it has taken work, research and time to be able to kick my own butt at home, but it’s made it all the more rewarding for me. With social media being so popular these days, there is all kinds of beneficial information on the internet to help give you ideas to work out at home. Instagram is a great resource. Since I’ve spent a lot of time and energy over the last few years coming up with ways to work out at home, I thought I would share my tips with you to help make your home work outs more successful.

Buy Some Weights

If I could preach anything to you this would be it. The main ones I use on a regular basis are two 5lb and two 10lb hand weights and one 20lb kettlebell. Lifting weights is a great way to build strong, lean muscles. I promise it will not make you bulky! Lifting weights was actually a turning point for me when I saw the scale going down, but more importantly, the inches coming off and having to buy smaller size clothes. The weights can be used in so many ways and can be so versatile to many exercises.

Download the GymBoss App on Your Phone

I love this app and use it all of the time when I’m traveling or doing a HIIT {High Intensity Interval Training}, EMOM {Every Minute on the Minute} or any kind of timed/interval training work out. For example, a HIIT work out I may put together could consists of 8 different exercises and I’ll write them down on a piece of paper so I can follow along as I’m working out. I’ll set my GymBoss app for 45 seconds on and 15 seconds off for 3 or 4 rounds. The app will alert me without me having to think about it and also helps me to keep up the high intensity of the work out by being timed. Here’s an example of a work out I have put together for myself and you can try it out too.

HIIT {High Intensity Interval Training} 3-4 Rounds {45 seconds on, 15 seconds off on Gymboss App}

1.) Pop Squats
2.) Burpees
3.) Jumping Lunges
4.) Bicycle Crunch
5.) Plank Jacks
6.) Curtsey Lunges with weights overhead
7.) Push-Ups
8.) Weighted Wall Sit

Use YouTube App on your TV or Phone

I love using YouTube when I’m not in the mood for creating my own home workouts and an added bonus is that they are free. My personal favorites are FitnessBlender and PopSugar. Under each of these you can type into the search menu whatever work out you’re looking for that day. For example, you can type in cardio, pilates, legs, arms, yoga etc. and you will get tons of options to choose from.

Switch Up Your Location

I generally work out in my living room, the backyard or my garage. Depending on the time of year, my mood or where I need to be to keep an eye on my kids usually depends on the location of where I work out. I like switching it up because just like anything else, I get bored looking at the same scenery over and over again so I try to change it up and keep it interesting.

Collect Work Out Items Along the Way

Over the years I have bought things here and there to keep me engaged. Sometimes it’s new athletic wear, an athletic watch, supplements, a new water bottle, or work out equipment. I feel like it’s a good investment because the things that I’m purchasing are items that I can keep and use whenever I want. Great places to purchase these items are at stores like Walmart, Target, Academy and even TJ Maxx.

I believe there’s a negative misconception about working out at home and I get it, some people need the accountability of the gym to help keep them on track. If that’s your thing, I think it’s great. Having two kids and a busy schedule often leads to unknown factors for me that frequently come up in my day. Working out at home has kept me accountable and has allowed me to forget about the excuses and just get the work out in. I constantly have to fight for my thirty minutes of time for my home workouts, but it’s worth it to me.

My other recommendation would be to talk to anyone is who more knowledgeable than you are on fitness related topics. For me personally, my sister-in-law Elissa has been a huge inspiration for me and part of the reason I am even able to plug out all of this useful information to you on home workouts. Feel free to reach out with any more questions!

A month later she met her husband David at her apartment complex swimming pool, and I guess you could say the rest is history. She now resides in Katy, TX with her husband David and their two children Avery {December 2014} and Myles {April 2017}, and will be welcoming another little boy this fall. Before kids, Katie had a career working in Commercial Real Estate, but once her daughter was born she figured out quickly that being a stay-at-home mom was something that she was destined to do. Her passions include in no particular order :: drinking coffee, collecting jewelry, fashion, fitness, cooking, politics, and crime/detective related Netflix series. In her free time you can catch her spending time with family and friends, drinking a glass of red wine, watching sports with her husband, trying out the latest hot spot restaurant, traveling, laughing, and not taking life too seriously.
