Stay Cool This Summer at These Houston Area Splash Pads

Stay Cool This Summer at These Houston Area Splash Pads | Houston Moms Blog

I clearly remember those trips to the pool with a little one in tow.  It was hot {as per usual in Houston summer} and we both needed to get out of the house.  I would get her water wings or her ring float and we’d head down to the neighborhood pool.  She’d splash around while I sat not the edge of the pool and made sure she was safe and having fun. I’d always been a little wary of the kiddie pool {because we all know that the kids are totally peeing in there} but it wasn’t until the day that I saw a floating poo pass by my legs as they were soaking in that water that I knew that the kiddie pool life was not for me.  I needed another option.

Enter the blessed splash pad!  Whoever thought of this is my hero!  These came into mainstream popularity around the time my middle daughter was born and I am so grateful!  My youngest is 8 years old and I still prefer the splash pad over a pool!  The kiddos have freedom to run around without the danger of possibly drowning.  There’s so much fun variety at a splash pad, and bonus:: I don’t have to put on a bathing suit to potentially soak in a bunch of child urine {or worse}  I’d say it’s a win all around!

And that lead me on an epic hunt for all the best Houston Area splash pads!

With the help of other HMB contributors, friends and some good old fashioned Google searching, I’ve compiled a list of some great splash pad options all around the Houston area!  Please feel free to leave a comment below if you have a favorite that I didn’t mention.  We’d love to know!

Inner Loop

{Jaycee Park} – This park is a favorite for Heights and Garden Oak residents!  It’s a smaller splash pad but it gets the job done.  The splash pad is equipped with timed spouts and oversized butterflies and leaves as well as benches for parents.  Additional selling points are that it has easily accessible parking and plenty of shade trees. The adjacent playground is a great option if you have a child that isn’t in the mood for a spray zone.

{Levy Park} – This park has a super fun and creative vibe!  It’s like if a work of art and a playground had a baby.   This splash pad is great for children who don’t like surprises as the water sprays in more of a mist and a shower than a dumped bucket and the little ones love it!  The playground itself offers so much “scope for the imagination”.

Located At :: 3801 Eastside Street, Houston, Texas 77098

{Houston Zoo (The Kathrine McGovern Water Play Park)} –  Before the Houston Zoo installed a splash pad, there was no way I’d be caught dead there in July and August!  {Actually, I probably would be caught dead if I went there!}  This fun installment includes a bucket dump zone, a splashy dragon and other fun squirty features.  The splash pad is included in the cost of zoo admission, but swim suits and swim diapers {if necessary} are required. They do sell some of those items on location, if you’re in a pinch.   Need to change?  No problem!  There are changing rooms available.  The park is in operation from 10:00am to 6:00pm April through October.

Located At :: The Houston Zoo {near the giraffes and the Wildlife Carousel}, 6200 Hermann Park Drive, Houston, Texas 77030

{Downtown Aquarium} – Heading to the aquarium to ride the Ferris wheel or just need to cool off while you’re downtown?  Bring along the kids’ swimsuits {or just let them have at it in their play clothes like a lot of kids you’ll see there} and they can cool off in the small splash pad located outside the aquarium. It’s FREE, and there are restrooms to change before you head inside!

{Stevenson Park} – The splash pad in Stevenson Park was a family favorite of ours when we lived in Friendswood.  The colorful simplicity of it and the ease of access made it a favorite hot weather hangout.  We loved it when we were there, but it has recently undergone an expansion that has doubled its size, offering even more and varied sprayers and décor.  And the shade y’all … the shade for parents to sit in. {Can you tell shade is HUGE thing for me?}  The splash pad is open from 8:00am – 8:00pm.
