In 2019, the Houston Moms Blog book club read
- Michelle Obama’s Becoming
- Liani Tamani’s Calling My Name
- Fredrik Backman’s Bear Town
- Rebecca Makkai’s The Great Believers
- Tomi Adeyemi’s Children of Blood and Bone
- Rebecca Skloot’s The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
Such great books! I had a wonderful time reading and discussing these amazing reads with y’all.
This year we’re starting 2020 with a parenting book–a first for us! I am pretty excited to read this book, but even more excited to discuss it with you.
The book comes from the New York Times Bestselling authors of The Whole-Brain Child: Daniel J. Siegel, M.D., and Tina Payne Bryson, Ph.D. It is entitled, The Power of Showing Up: How Parental Presence Shapes Who Our Kids Become and How Their Brians Get Wired.
And if you are a busy mom who just felt a twinge of guilt when you read the title or if you are a new mom trying to figure things out or an experienced mom who is still trying to figure things out {because isn’t that what the whole mom-gig is, really–guilt + figuring things out?}, please don’t shy away from this book!
The intro sucked me in immediately when the authors said::
“We can’t wait to strip away all of the child-rearing debates and controversies, and boil parenting down to the one concept that matters most when it comes to helping your kids be happy and healthy, so they enjoy and succeed in life and in relationships.”
Yup. I am on the hook. I have to know more! If you haven’t read any of their other books, the authors say this book can actually serve as an excellent introduction to all that they have been writing about over the last several years. And, just in case you–like I–felt skeptical in believing that there is ONE concept that could possibly outweigh all the others when it comes to parenting, the authors’ very next statement reads::
“The fact is that parenting is complex and challenging, and the answers to most questions depend on the age and stage of the child, the overall situation, and your child’s temperament, not to mention your own. That being said, virtually all parenting quesitons and dilemmas do come down to the idea of relationship, so that’s what we’ll be focusing on here.”
Are you in? Let’s do this!
If you are new to our book club (or you forgot), here’s how it works::
Step 1-Read the book.
As much as you can. This book will be easy to discuss whether you read 15 pages or all 7 chapters. There really won’t be any spoilers, so read as much as you can and don’t beat yourself up if you don’t get around to finishing it in time.
Step 2-Join us for book club on Facebook on March 5th.
No need to find a babysitter or fight traffic or even wear matching clothes! Just sit down with the device of your choice and join in on the conversation. We’ll start our Facebook Live at about 8:30pm {as long as all technology is working!}, and you can join us when we start or whenever you can manage to be there. We’ll talk for about an hour, then sign off. The video discussion will stay up, so you can even watch and comment later–we get notified of your comments, so we can keep the conversation going long after our initial meeting has ended.
It is that easy! If you’ve been wanting to read more and need some accountability, come on over! Join our Facebook group today for updates and to vote for future book club selections.
See y’all March 5, 2020!
