A Houston Mom’s Guide to March 2017

Hands down, March is one of my absolute favorite months in our wonderful Bayou City. Not only do we kick off the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo season in high-style, but we also have the lazy days of Spring Break for those who opt for a staycation. The weather is typically mild and gorgeous {save for those allergy days – pollen and cedar, I’m glaring at you!}, and there is certainly no lack of outdoor events to partake in. We invite you to peruse this list and choose 1 or 10 activities to enjoy some quality fam bam time! And if you’re heading to the rodeo, don’t forget to check out our super helpful guide for all the things YOU need to know this year. Break out those boots, dust off those hats, and let’s show Houston what good times look like. Yee-haw!

Now through March 31st | {check website for times} :: Main Street Theatre’s Ramona Quimby

Adapted from the beloved novels by Beverly Cleary, prepare to be delighted by the hilarious Ramona antics along with the rest of the Klickitat gang. Ramona will learn that being a grown up is hard work indeed when her father loses his job. Of course, there will be appearances by the always irreverent Beezus as well. Recommended for ages Kindergarten and up. {Note :: children under the age of 3 are not permitted in the theatre.} Purchase tickets in advance here

March 2nd – 4th | 5 – 11pm {Thurs}; Noon – 11pm {Fri}; 9am – 11pm {Sat} :: World’s Championship Bar-B-Que Contest

One of the most highly anticipated events of the Houston Rodeo season is the acclaimed bar-b-que contest. Sample world-famous BBQ from the biggest names on the circuit, take in live music from some of the best names in Texas Country Music at The Garden, and play games and enjoy wild rides in the carnival. If you don’t have connections for the private tents, not to worry! The public venue tickets will buy you entry into all of the above, plus complimentary sliced beef sandwiches at The Chuckwagon — and don’t forget to save room for all of the over-the-top rodeo food offerings. Grab your tickets here for this boot stompin’, good eatin’, great ol’ Houston time. {2 and under are free!}

As we slide into spring, Discovery Green has packed up their infamous ice skating rink and will be open for business as Houston’s only outdoor roller rink.
