A Houston Mom’s Guide to a Spring Break Staycation

Guess what, Houston moms…Spring Break is almost here! Go look at the calendar, it’s true. We are only weeks away from a house full of kids and entertainment will definitely be necessary! I am so excited for Spring Break this year because all three of our kiddos are finally out of the baby stage, and we can all start doing activities together. This is a major milestone in family fun! We have decided to stay in Houston this year and will have a little staycation. With all that Houston has to offer, there is no way we will be at a loss for fun things to do and places to visit!

And because Houston is the land where the weather changes at the drop of a hat… here are 5 outdoor AND 5 indoor activities you can enjoy with your families this Spring Break too!

Houston Spring Break Staycation

Outdoor Spring Break Fun

1. The Houston Zoo :: I know – this is a given, but our family cannot get enough of the zoo. And what I love most about our local zoo is that not only do they have some really great animals, but they also have a ton of fun events for kids too. For Spring, they will again have Wild Wheels where you can enjoy the zoo with your toddler or infant while learning colors through the outdoors.  Brown giraffe, anyone?

2. Schlitterbahn :: I just love that we have a water park back in the greater Houston area again! If you have not made it out to Schlitterbahn Galveston, you are missing out. They have an outdoor water park AND an indoor one too, and you know what I love most about it there…you can bring your own food and have a picnic! How fun {and economical} is that!

3. Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo :: It’s here, it’s here…The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo! The one time of year when ALL Houstonians turn into cowboys and cowgirls and rodeo it up. My girls love Kids Country where they can learn more about life on a farm, agriculture, and do a little muttin bustin. And when supporting the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, not only are you having fun – but you are contributing to an awesome organization who has given nearly 15,000 scholarships since 1957.  Love knowing that I’m a part of that!

4. Froberg’s Farm :: If you are ready for some strawberries this season, you must go to Froberg’s Farm. It is a large farm located in Alvin with rows and rows of the freshest strawberries that you can PICK yourselves. Buy a bucket your first time and bring it back time and time again. And in their farmer’s market, they have an array of homegrown fruits and vegetables for purchase too!

5. Bayou Wildlife Zoo :: This little gem that is also in the Alvin area is one of the neatest places around. With over 80 acres to take you around by tram, the park boasts over 500 different animals and over 60 species. To top it off, they also have also have three monkey islands, an alligator pond, and a petting zoo. Bayou Wildlife Zoo was created over three decades ago and is now one of only four zoos in Texas. If your kids love animals, then this outing is a MUST do this Spring Break!

Indoor Spring Break Fun

1. Space Center Houston :: How awesome is it that we have Space Center Houston at our back door? This place is amazing and full of fun for all ages. Space Center is the only place where you can take your family and get a full view of what it is really like in space. You can see astronauts train, try space food, land a shuttle, and even get a behind the scenes look at  NASA. They also have a pretty amazing playground where us parents can take a break and let the kiddos run off all their extra energy!

2. Houston Museum of Natural Science :: The museums we have in Houston are amazing, but the diverse amount of exhibits at the Natural Science museum is outstanding. From the African wildlife to chemistry to Ancient Egypt and so much more, the Museum is full of great family fun. But our favorite has to be the paleontology exhibit with over 450 fossils – it definitely does not disappoint.

3. Moody Gardens :: Yet another one of our favorite places to visit here is Houston – Moody Gardens is always a must do! With a rainforest, aquarium, penguin exhibit,s and so much more, you can spend a whole day at Moody Gardens and never get bored. And if you are looking for a quick getaway, you can stay at their hotel and spa too. It makes for the perfect little vacation and is just outside of town!

4. Sky Zone Trampoline Park :: OMG! I am so excited about this place. We have not been yet, but you better believe you will see us there this Spring Break. This is a place COVERED in trampolines. You can jump and bounce all over the place and even off of the walls. And here is the best part, moms…it is not just for kids! This is going to be nothing short of amazing. Can you say play date?

5. Children’s Museum of Houston :: As regulars to the Children’s Museum, we always have a blast. They have exhibits and play areas for all ages and do just a wonderful job of creating a fun learning space for kids of all ages. But did you know during Spring Break they go ALL out? They will have hamster ball rides, bungee trampolines, and even a shaving cream fight in honor of their 10th anniversary. The museum will be open 7 days a week from March 8th through the 23rd, so do not miss out!

Just putting all of this together makes me even more excited for our Spring Break staycation this year! We plan to visit as many of these fun places as we can within our week together and hope that you do to!

Tell us what your Spring Break plans are! Will you be traveling or enjoying a staycation like me?
