Introducing…HMB’s Book Club!

With the approach of summer comes the promise of free time.  The long days and warm nights.  {Okay, HOT nights.  This is still Houston!}  The kids spending their time on soccer or football fields.  Baseball diamonds.  Pools.  Parks.  All of that.  Sounds fantastic, except there’s only so much Facebooking you can do until you wonder how else you’re supposed to spend your time waiting on them to be finshed.

Which is why we have taken a cue from our sister site Jacksonville Moms Blog and want to bring you…

Houston Moms Blog’s Book Club

Hosted by :: Heather & Breonna

HMB Book Club

We want to use this extra time, these lazy days to really get back into reading.  And not just that, but have someone to talk about the book with!

:: Heather ::

Toddler Reading CropI am a book addict.  I absolutely love sitting down with my toddler, Skeeter, and reading everything from Cinderella to The Very Hungry Caterpillar.  Even with a stocked bookcase, she’s started reciting parts of her favorite stories.  I enjoy watching her light up over her faves, and I hope that I can pass along my passion for books with her.

My idea of relaxation is curled up with my Kindle and a glass of sangria.  As someone who {more than once} went over the baggage check weight limit while on vacation thanks to the suitcase stuffed with books, the Kindle is a life saver for me.  I am currently ahead on my Goodreads challenge of 50 books in 2014.  I also host a weekly Book Club on my personal blog, where you can link up whatever you’re currently reading – and let us know whether you liked it or hated it!  The HMB Book Club is different, because now YOU can tell me what to read, and we can all discuss it together!

:: Bre ::

baby booksI love reading.  I mean LOVE it.  I even threw Addy a book party for her first birthday.  I wrote a post about how you can find random Little Free Libraries in the city.  I can’t remember ever not being in the middle of reading a book.  I want to use this book club to connect with moms {or friends of moms or just Houstonians!} and try something out of my norm.  Something to force me to get through my Goodreads challenge this year.

I joined Goodreads in 2010 when I got my first Kindle as a Christmas gift.  Even though I fought the eBook revolution for a while, I find that owning one hasn’t curbed my need to go to bookstores.  It’s just a slightly more convenient way to carry 200 books in my purse at once.  But nothing, NOTHING, tops the smell of walking into Half Price Books.  Admiring covers.  Buying new bookmarks.

Let me calm down.  My nerd is showing.

So to really kick this summer off right, we want to be diplomatic about this.  We’re letting you, the Houston Moms Blog readers, decide what our first book will be.  Check out the books by clicking on the Goodread’s links, then be sure to vote below!

June Options…

Labor Day by Joyce Maynard. Fiction. 244 pages.
{Bonus :: You can watch the movie with Josh Brolin and Kate Winslet afterwards!}

I Don’t Know What You Know Me From by Judy Greer. Non Fiction/Essays. 256 pages.

Dangerous Girls by Abby McDonald. Fiction. 388 pages.

** WINNER :: The One & Only by Emily Giffin. Fiction. 432 pages. **

We’re going to leave voting open for a week.  Then, we’ll announce the book and give you a month to read it!  Don’t worry, we’ll check in from time to time to make sure you’re on track.  Then Heather and Bre will post their feelings and open up the discussion!

You can connect with the HMB book club at any time!

  1. I DO love to read to my little one, but I do NOT require her to sit still, look at the pages or even listen. I read while she fidgets with toys (and is not into a purposeful play). I believe that the attention span is built page by page, book by book, month by month and year by year. I feel guilty when I don’t read to her – that said, I rarely have time to read for myself….
    ;-(

  2. Love this idea and can’t wait to get started with the winner (and hopefully get to the runners up as well). Thanks for setting this up.
