Are you an area mom who enjoys writing?

Are you interested in connecting with other moms and rediscovering your love for creative writing?

Do you enjoy social media, creating reels, and being a local influencer?

Are you the in-the-know mom? The one whose friends always text because you’ve got the scoop – whether it’s knowing what’s happening around town or knowing the how to’s when it comes to your baby/toddler/teen? Houston Moms welcomes your know-how, and we’d love to share your voice!

We want to hear from women who are often unheard or under represented when it comes to all parts of their motherhood experience. We have some of your stories, but there is always room for improvement, and we will keep working to share the stories of ALL mothers.

For this open call, our goal is to give space to the voices and experiences we aren’t publishing yet. If you enjoy writing, are passionate about motherhood, and don’t see your experience represented by our content, we’d love to hear from you. We’d especially love to see representation from our Northern and South Eastern portions of Houston. And diversity is incredibly important to us.

So, is it your voice and experience that we’re missing? We want to hear from you!

Maybe it’s not you, but your friend who would be perfect for this! We hope you’ll tell them about this opportunity!

This is a volunteer position, but there are some really fun perks to make it all worthwhile. Note: you do NOT have to be a writer to apply! We are simply looking for local moms who love to share stories, have a passion for motherhood and their community, and are looking for a way to connect!

Want to know more?

We so appreciate that you would consider sharing your thoughts, experience, and inspiration to the Houston Moms readers! Before you think more on the opportunity, please read the following guidelines and feel free to contact us with any questions.

  • Think LOCAL: We love to keep all of our content relevant to the ADD NOTES ABOUT YOUR MARKET HERE area…or at least within driving distance for day trips and outings. Articles can feature places to go and things to do while more general topics {feeding, potty training, DIY…} can be given a local twist simply because they are written by a local mom – YOU!
  • Think MOMS: It may sound obvious, but our target audience is made up of moms, so it only makes sense that our content remains under the broad category of parenting, within which you have a ton of subtopics to choose from – the experience of being a mom, stages and phases of development, tips and tricks, home management strategies specific to moms, and of course, all the locally-focused ideas mentioned earlier. At the end of the day though, we are all moms just trying to make our lives a little bit more enjoyable. If you have an idea that interests you and your friends, then our readers would probably love to read about it too!
  • Think CONNECTIONS: We encourage you to think critically about ways to engage your audience. Try to include clever and catchy post titles that draw people in or spark curiosity, and give your readers a reason to comment by asking questions – “So tell me, what is the most awful potty training experience you have ever encountered?”
  • Most Importantly: Write what you love, and love what you write! Create what you love, and love what you create!

As you consider what content to submit as a sample with your application, please think on these important guidelines…

  • Your sample submissions should be original to you, meaning, you are the author. Please keep copyright infringement laws in mind.
  • Kinda obvious, but we have to say it… content should be free from the following – profanity, sexual language, political endorsement of a party or candidate, political commentary, op-ed commentary on controversial social and/or political issues, and derogatory or inflammatory language.

What you GIVE…

  • 9 original posts per calendar year that fits within the brand and mission of Houston Moms

Are you unsure if Houston Moms would be a good fit for you? Read what our current contributors love about being a part of our team:

I love being a contributor to Houston Moms because it has me writing again regularly! I love writing and having a platform and community to share my writing with has been such a gift. – Bethany D.

I love being a contributor to Houston Moms because sometimes we lend a voice to the unspoken stuff that women may not always feel comfortable sharing themselves. There can be a ‘me too’ moment amongst readers and a sense of finally being ‘seen’. –Vhairi M

I love being a contributor to Houston Moms because it is an outlet for me to write and connect with other mothers. Oftentimes, motherhood can feel like an island and writing posts that others relate to is like building a bridge to their island. The more bridges the better! – Sarah H.

I love being a contributor because it pushes me to uncomfortable places. It challenges me to consider viewpoints and experiences that, sometimes, directly conflict with my own. However, at the end of the day we know we are all mothers, and it’s all hard, and we stand behind each other and learn from each other – no matter where we’re coming from. -Kirsten C.

I love being a contributor to Houston Moms because I rediscovered my love of writing along with new mom friendships I treasure. And after a tough year, these treasures are needed. –Kim R.

As a long time reader, first time writer, I’ve loved getting to know some of the women behind so many of the essays I’ve read over the past 6 years. They’re as real, funny and encouraging as the words on their many pages. This community, for both writers and readers, makes motherhood feel a little less lonely. –Anne R.

I was new to Houston when I became a member of the group, and it has not only helped me grow as a writer (so much so that I am publishing a book this year) but offered me a place to belong. To celebrate the wins and mourn the losses. To be myself and be accepted and cheered on. In a world where the internet depresses me daily, HMB is a bright spot of joy in my life. –Lindsay G.

I love being a contributor to Houston Moms because it has given me a creative outlet as well as a platform to share on topics that are important to me. It’s been such a fun and valuable experience to be part of a diverse community where we can journey together through this crazy adventure called motherhood! –Vicky Y.

I love being a contributor to Houston Moms because it is so special to be a part of this huge thing that connects so many moms. Reading other moms’ writing helped me feel a connection when everything was so new and scary! -Cindy E.
