No-Sew DIY Houston Texans Tutu

I wouldn’t call myself a “boy mom” despite having two little guys under my roof. Boy mom, girl mom – we are all mommas in my book.  That being said, it isn’t likely that either one of my children will be donning a frilly, fluffy, football-themed tutu any time soon! However, the thought of a baby or toddler in a tutu sounds perfect for a Sunday afternoon watching our Houston Texans…and well, that’s just an idea after my crafting heart. Plus, I have a little secret – Houston Moms Blog has some fun Texans news to come soon, so I am hoping to get all of you excited about crafting your own too!

I crafted a few of these before for a friend’s tutu themed baby shower, so I knew the process. However, I quickly reviewed with several YouTube videos, made a couple of trips to Michael’s and Jo-Ann Fabric {don’t forget your coupons!}, and sat down with my materials during the game while the babies napped last week. I love watching football, but I have to say that I would much rather be productive than simply sit and watch. And I’d say that decking out this sweet friend classifies as productive…

No-Sew TuTu Tutorial

These tutus are super easy, fairly quick to make, and tailorable to your own color preferences. Of course, I think Battle Red, Liberty White, and Steel Blue should be everyone’s color of choice.  But Houston is a collection of people from so many places, so go ahead and craft away in your own team colors. If you so choose.

Materials ::

  • 1 of each – roll of red and white tulle *
  • 1 roll of Houston Texans ribbon {purchased at Jo-Ann Fabric} **
  • 1 blue crochet Headband {found on the ribbon aisle at Michael’s}
  • Cardboard scrap cut to desired length of tutu
  • Binder clip
  • Scissors

*The tutu crafted for the 8-month-old cutie above used all of the red tulle and almost all of the white too. But I used two layers of tulle knotted on the headband to make it extra fluffy, and I decided to use more red than white. If you are making a tutu for an older child, keep in mind you will probably need a third roll.
**Ribbon is technically optional…but highly recommended. You could even use navy tulle or simple football themed ribbon (pictured above) if you would like too.

Process ::

1.  Watch a couple of tutorials to see some tutu making in action. I found this one and this one quite helpful.

2.  Cut tulle strips. You can do this as shown in the YouTube videos. However, I like to cut several strips at once. To do this, line up the edge of the tulle with the edge of your cardboard and secure it in place with the binder clip. Wrap the tulle around and around {and around and around some more}, ending so that the final edge aligns with the initial edge too. Following along with that same final edge, cut through all of your wrapped tulle. Unclip and set strips aside.  From here, you can cut all of your strips at once or cut more as you go. Totally up to you!

3.  Pick a starting point at the bottom of the headband and knot a strip through one of the crochet holes. {I didn’t take step by step pictures here because the video tutorials above do a great job of demonstrating.} I knotted three red strips then a white on the bottom row because I knew I wanted more red in my tutu.

4.  After you complete the bottom row, start knotting on the row directly above it. I used the Houston Texans ribbon intermittently on this row and flanked it with white tulle and then red in between.  So cute!

5.  Have fun with this, and get your cuties ready for some Houston Texans football!

And don’t forget – we have a BIG Houston Texans announcement coming soon, so be sure to connect with us on social media to stay in the loop!

    • Definitely easy! There are some tutorials out there that are even easier and I bet Kennedy would love twirling around in these. I can make her one to insure she’s not wearing Patriots gear on Sundays! 😉

  1. Super cute Jen! I love making tutus for my girls. I have some I made for Eden that my other 2 girls still prance around in.

  2. I NEED to make one of these for Haddie Bug before football season is over. I have a few more weeks left to procrastinate though, right?!?
