Summer Snack Attack :: Fun Ideas to Create with your Kids

Summer is officially here, and the kids are out of school. If your kids are anything like mine, they will want to snack constantly, while complaining that they are bored. Here are three fun snack ideas you can create with your kids!

Homemade Yoghurt Drops::

These are the perfect frozen treat to cool off on hot summer days. I love to have them ready in the freezer so that my kids can enjoy them as soon as they come in from playing outdoors.

What you’ll need ::

  • One container of your favorite yoghurt
  • Sprinkles or mini chocolate chips
  • Pastry bag or Ziploc bag
  • Baking tray lined with parchment paper

Directions ::

  1. Pour your yoghurt in a pastry bag and clip 1/4” opening at the tip. I like to tie the tops with a rubber band so that the yoghurt doesn’t come out of the top when my kids are squeezing the bag.
  2. Have the kids gently squeeze little dollops of yoghurt onto the baking tray lined with parchment paper.
  3. You can make them fun by adding a topping of your choice to the yoghurt drops before freezing them.
  4. Freeze for 20 minutes in the freezer and remove from baking tray. Store in a freezer bag or airtight container to enjoy.

Creamed Berry Cake::

This is my play on the popular tart letter cakes that are so popular on Pinterest right now. This snack doubles as a fun craft and snack for the kids to create. You can also make homemade whipped cream for added deliciousness.

What you’ll need ::

  • Frozen pound cake sliced ¼” thick,
  • One can of Reddi Whip
  • Fresh berries sliced or chopped
  • Strawberry jam
  • Sprinkles
  • Cookie cutters

Directions ::

  1. Have your child punch out two of the same shapes from their pound cake using the cookie cutter. This works better if the pound cake is still frozen.
  2. Spread a thin layer of jam onto one slice of pound cake. Then pipe little dollops of whipped cream on top of the jam.
  3. Add the second slice of pound cake on top and cover with whipped cream dollops.
  4. Top it with berries and sprinkles to enjoy.

Snack Station ::

This is a lifesaver for my family during the summer. Before learning this tip, I was constantly yelling at my kids to shut the fridge or close the pantry door. This isn’t necessarily a snack that they can make themselves, but you can involve them with prepping the items. Having a snack station also helps you control their snack choices and portions.

What you’ll need ::

  • Your choice of prepped veggie sticks and fresh fruits
  • Your choice of snacks: goldfish, pretzels, crackers, dried fruits, fruit cups, etc.
  • Something to hold the snacks in like silicone cup cake liners, portion cups, or snack sized Ziploc bags
  • Fun way to display the snacks like a tiered cupcake stand or tray

Directions ::

Each morning, set out your choice of snacks for the day. Display the snacks where it is accessible to the kids in the kitchen or breakfast table. Try to have a couple of choices for veggies, fruits, and dry snack. Add one portion of something not so healthy like their favorite candy or individual chip bag as a bonus treat. My kids love to drink Capri Sun, so I will add that as a choice every few days. I have two designated snack times throughout the day, and the kids are used to following that schedule.

I love spending time with my kids in the kitchen, and I hope that yours will enjoy recreating some of the snack ideas that I have shared.
