Top 10 Free Apps for Young Kids

I’ll admit it. I bring the iPad and headphones to the restaurant {sometimes} so my kid can be entertained while we eat. I am one of *those* parents. I used to be one of those people who said I would never do such a thing. I may have even judged people that did it. But hey, I already have my hands full with a 1 year old who refuses to sit for longer than five minutes and loves to throw everything she can get her hands on. {Can you tell eating out at restaurants is very fun for us?} Having the 4 year old occupied for a few minutes really helps.

After researching and asking some of the best moms in town, we here at Houston Moms Blog have come up with a great list of  10 FREE apps for kids!  And if you’re looking for great apps for mom, we’ve got those too – just click here!

Top 10 Free Apps for Young Kids

Disney Junior Appisodes :: This app allows your child to play and interact with some of their favorite Disney characters, including my personal faves Mickey and Doc. You can also watch full episodes of some of the shows!

Fisher-Price Apps :: Fisher-Price has A LOT of free apps for kids. We personally love Giggle Gang and Laugh & Learn – both of which are great for littles! Giggle Gang has animals that pop up and make noises along with the introduction of shapes and colors. {And a lot of baby laughing!} Laugh & Learn walks toddlers through fun games with shapes, colors, numbers, and letters.

My First ABC :: With three options {basic alphabet recognition, tracing, and an identification game}, this app will definitely hold your kiddos attention and grow with them as they learn their ABC’s.

Hooked on Phonics :: You have probably heard of this popular home reading system that uses songs and games to help kids learn to read, and now you can download “unit one” for free – add on other units if you choose for a small fee. We have been using unit one for a few weeks without the need to add anything else though!

Scribble Lite :: This app is exactly what it sounds like. And who doesn’t love to scribble?! With this free draw app, you can choose from dozens of colors, pens, pencils, markers, etc.  Perfect for introducing those pre-writing skills in a fun way!

KG Math Lite :: A free version of the widely popular KG Math app, this app is a great way to introduce your little one to math. There are fun games for addition, subtraction, counting, shapes, patterns, and more.

Colory Caterpillar :: Another one of our faves, this app allows your kiddo to build caterpillars that scurry away into their homes once complete.  Best part?  They think that they are just having fun, but they are really learning color identification, matching, sorting, and counting.  Score!

Toddler Teasers :: Think online flash cards. There are also puzzles, a virtual toy box, and fun quizzes.

Puzzingo :: Two words – online. puzzles. Fun puzzles with a ton of different themes – everything from animals and fish to rockets and princesses.  Such a fun way to build those visual skills and get that brain working!

Toddler’s Seek & Find Apps :: More great learning apps disguised as something fun!  These apps allow your little one to explore and teaches cause and effect in such a silly way.  Touch the balloon?  It pops!  {Several of the apps are free, but some of them do have a slight fee. So far we have just downloaded the free ones, but if your kid just adores them – it’s great to know you can always buy more!}

Trust me, I would much rather have my kids reading books than reading a computer screen. {And yes, they read plenty of books too!} But as I have learned, there are so many great resources out there to help kids learn and keep them entertained too! So, go ahead…download a few apps to help make your life a little less insane. This is coming from a mom who just fed her toddler two cereal bars and cheetos so she would sit still long enough for me to type out this post! No judgement here!!
