Why I Love My 30s

I used to dread getting older. Not in some Peter Pan way, where I wanted to stay young forever. I just feared the unknown of being a real grown up and turning 30. Didn’t your 30s mean you started to find grey hairs and you had to use overnight cream for emerging face wrinkles? And you had to be professional and serious all the time? No, thank you.

I used to think that people in their 30s were old until I inched closer to my 30th birthday and realized that I really looked up to a lot of my friends that were already there. They were beautiful, trendy, and had it all together. And I wanted to be like them. When I realized this, I slowly began to embrace my 30s as a time where I, too, could have it all together.

Now that I’m 32, I honestly feel like this is the “time of my life” {I know it’s an overused cliche – whatever.}. While I don’t have it all together {yet}, I’m having fun because I’m finally comfortable in my own skin.

Here are 7 reasons why I love my 30s ::

1.} I truly do not care what other people think about me. I cannot tell you the HOURS of sleep I lost in my 20s agonizing over someone else’s opinion of me. What a waste. There’s a woman at work who has attempted to make my life miserable in her own passive-aggressive, undermining, catty way. I let it eat me alive for too long. I don’t want to give her any more of my time or brainpower because giving her my time is letting her win. And I am not okay with that.

2.} I take care of my body because I want to model a healthy lifestyle for my children, and not by crash dieting so I can fit into a smaller size. I actually enjoy eating vegetables and unprocessed foods because it makes me feel better. Furthermore, the highlight of my week is my spin class. I love the energy I have after an intense workout – there’s just nothing like it.

3.} I earn more money, and I can enjoy a better lifestyle. I no longer have to worry about paying off student loans or credit cards. And I can afford to shop at nicer stores, visit the spa more frequently, and drink better wine!

4.} In my 30s I’ve remained friends with people with whom I have established deep connections throughout my life, and let go of friendships that were no longer healthy for me. I’ve learned that you don’t have to be friends with every single person you’ve ever known just because you went to school together or played on the same team. I love that I’m friends with women in their 60s and women in their young 20s. In my 30s I’ve come to believe that friendship is a gift and that people are worth investing in.

5.} I’m confident in who I am, and I no longer feel like I have to be who I think other people want me to be. I’ve gained perspective and realized what is important to me and who is important to me. And with this newfound confidence, I appreciate people who are different than me so much more than I used to. My life is richer because I am choosing to learn from others instead of casting a stone at them because they don’t see life the exact same way I do.

6.} I’m in an ideal place in my career because I’m no longer entry-level, I’m experienced enough to earn great promotions, and my opinion is respected among my colleagues. Ten years into my career, I feel like I finally know where I’m headed, and I’m so excited about the journey and all of the knowledge I will acquire along the way. I now look at the new employees who are fresh out of college, and I breathe a sigh of relief that it’s not me starting at the bottom all over again!

7.} I’m looking forward to walking through this decade in comfortable flats or wedges because high heels are so 20s. I care a lot more now about being comfortable than being trendy. I feel like I’ve found my style and no longer need to keep up with what fashionistas say I should be wearing. Accepting my body type and what looks good on me has made shopping a whole lot easier and much more successful!

I never imagined that I would love my 30s like I do. I love being a mom to my littles, I’m madly in love with my husband, I treasure my family members {most of them, anyway}, and I’d walk through fire for my tribe of girlfriends. I am claiming my 30s as a decade where I loved hard and pursued my passions. And you just can’t go wrong with that.

Brittney F
Originally from Louisiana, Brittney has called Houston home for nearly all her life. Brittney graduated from Houston Baptist University where she was a member of Phi Mu and a four-year cheerleader. It didn’t take long after graduation for her to meet her husband Jeremy on the sand volleyball courts at Memorial Park. She jokes that when marrying Jeremy, she also married LSU because she tied the knot with the most passionate Tiger football fan. Many weekends in the fall, they can be found in the shadows of Tiger Stadium at their big family tailgating party. Brittney has a Master's Degree from LSU and works in secondary education as an administrator and a cheerleading coach. Brittney and Jeremy have three boys, Connor {Nov 2012}, Parker {Nov 2014}, and Ryan {May 2018}. Brittney is a big baby-making, food allergy fighting, NICU surviving mom. Though she grew up surrounded by hairbows, pom poms, and lots of pink, Brittney now embraces being a boy mom. She loves raising her three boys and learning all about superheroes, baseball, and the pain of stepping on a lego when barefoot. In her kid-free time she enjoys working on craft projects, getting lost in a good book, and watching Grey's Anatomy.
