Why San Antonio is the Perfect Getaway for Houston Families

We love working with fun partners like Hilton Hotels in order to bring our Houston families great ideas for quick getaways like San Antonio!

Of course, “remember the Alamo.” But for Houstonians, new and old alike, it’s easy to forget that there is some much more to San Antonio than historical landmarks.

A quick 200-mile road trip will lead you into Spurs territory, where there is a ton of fun to be had. Perfect for family time this summer!

Summer has arrived, and that means family vacation season! But for me, the thought of traveling with three small children on a limited budget in the Texas heat is almost enough to keep me at home the next three months. But family trips have many great benefits for kids, including bonding with parents and siblings, creating lifelong memories, and being exposed to different people and cultures. So while our family won’t be taking a major vacation this year, we are planning a quick getaway sometime before school starts again. Thankfully,  San Antonio, Texas is a short three hour drive from Houston, and is a city with no shortage of family fun. And this summer, Hilton’s Texas Sized Savings Package offers families amazing savings at some of San Antonio’s biggest attractions, just for staying in one of their hotels!

In my experience, having a plan for what we are going to see and do on our trips is key. There is so much to do and see in San Antonio, but my husband and I decided that realistically, our kids can probably handle three attractions at the most. We plan on visiting Six Flags Fiesta Texas, SeaWorld, and the San Antonio Zoo.

Six Flags Fiesta Texas

Six Flags Fiesta Texas is one of Texas’ premier amusement parks, and has rides and attractions for every age and thrill-tolerance level. My husband can’t stop talking about riding the new Joker Carnival of Chaos rollercoaster, opening this summer. For him, spinning at up to 75 mph 17 stories in the air sounds like the best time ever, but that gets a big ol’ NOPE from me. Instead, I’ll be hanging with our littles at the Kiddee Koaster, Grand Carousel and other kid-appropriate rides. Then, our whole family can cool off on the Gully Washer together, a white water rafting ride sure to delight the kids when we all get drenched.

SeaWorld

Our family loves everything about SeaWorld, especially the shows and animal attractions. Our favorites are the classic beluga whale show and awe-inspiring while completely hilarious Pets Ahoy, featuring animals rescued from local animal shelters. When we visit this summer, we won’t miss the brand new Turtle Reef attraction, where we will get to see endangered sea turtles up close and personal. My little kids also love SeaWorld’s Sesame Street Bay of Play- 3 acres of rides, climbing structures and play areas just for them.

San Antonio Zoo

After visiting two big amusement parks, we’ll be ready for a more low-key, yet still fun-filled day in San Antonio. We can’t wait to visit the San Antonio Zoo, especially their special summer exhibit, Wild Australia! My brother and his family live in Australia, and so my kids are especially excited to see the kangaroos and koalas native to their uncle and aunt’s home country. We also might splurge for a Beastly Breakfast with either a hippo or giraffes to start our day at the zoo.

Family trips are all about making memories, and our quick getaway to San Antonio will surely give us plenty of opportunities to do just that. Hopefully, we’ll also be able to squeeze in a visit to the Riverwalk and take a peek at the Alamo while we are in the city. And the kids are almost as excited about staying in a hotel as they are about going to Fiesta Texas, SeaWorld, and the San Antonio Zoo! Alamo City, here we come!
