Breonna’s Story

Baby fever.

That feeling that comes over some women at some random point in their lives when they sit back and think, “Good gracious I need a baby in my life.” Cute babies are suddenly everywhere you look.  At the store smiling quietly.  On Facebook looking extremely cute.  Friends have them.  Family has them.  You feel that you need one too.

I thought this was a total internet hoax…until it happened to me.  I was about 27ish.  Tyrone and I had been together for awhile and spent our evenings and weekends eating pizza and drinking and watching movies.  It was great.  But then we started having discussions about life and turning 30 and children and it started to get to me.

Fast forward a few months to both of us staring at an EPT with a simple word displayed. “Pregnant.”

Then the research started.  I read books.  I joined The Bump.  I was talking to my OB/GYN.  I started a pregnancy blog.  I took prenatal vitamins.  I walked a mile every other day at the middle school across the street.  I ate well {…okay, better}.  I gained 25 pounds.  I refused to find out the gender.  I signed us up for a baby class. I cared little about other people’s advice that was not asked for.  I did research on Mini Cooper forums to see which carseat and stroller would fit in my car.  I had all the knowledge I needed.  I was in charge.

Tyrone’s 30th birthday was March 12th, and we were due to have our baby March 8th.  He was extremely excited to have another March baby in the house.

Around 10 pm on February 27th, I started to have contractions.  We had just done a tour of Memorial Hermann in Memorial City.  We were super excited that such a great hospital was just minutes away from the house.  {Plus, every delivery room was private and the recovery rooms had DVD players!}  I brushed off the contractions as just being tired from being huge and doing all the walking in the hospital.  I took a shower and laid back down hoping to get some sleep before work in the morning.

But the contractions didn’t stop.  Around midnight they were hurting, and I woke Tyrone up by saying, “Um, it might be something going on here.”

“It’s not March!”

He pulled up the contraction timer app, and we attempted to clock contractions that way.  But that’s incredibly hard to do when… a) you’ve never had contractions before and b) you are having contractions.

4 am :: Go to the hospital.

7 am :: Email work that I am in the hospital bed in labor.

9:48am :: Baby.

{I remember this because I kept a running log on my Blackberry for blogging/baby book purposes.  No lie.}

We started the barrage of calls to family and picture texts and Facebook posts and accepting visitors and dozing in and out of sleep and getting blood pressure checked and – “Oops, I didn’t buy any girl clothes. Please take this gift card and run across the skybridge to Target.” {Yes, the hospital has a skybridge to the mall!!!}

The guests left about the time visitng hours were over. 9 pm.  Although labor was easy{ish}, I had still been up 24+ hours.  I was hungry.  And tired.  And had this tiny person around.  A girl.  Born in February.  With waaay too much hair.  And suddenly I realized that despite all the research and all the preparation and all the baby fever, I might not be as in charge as I thought I was.

are you my mommy?

Are you my mommy?

are you sure?

Are you sure?

 And I’ve loved every minute of it since.  I’m a mom.  And I am completely winging it.
