Stockings Hung with Care

Before Addy came along, the youngest person I spent Christmas with was like 17.  We just didn’t have many kids around.  So in order to get into the Christmas spirit without actually having to do too much, my sister and I decided we would create and hang stockings.

We’ve stuck with this tradition for the last 6 years.  And now that Addy has good {enough} fine motor skills and can squeeze a tube of glue, I let her get her hand in the action this year.

First, we hit up any craft store for cheapie felt stockings.  If you pay more than a dollar, you’ve paid too much.  And at this time of year ALL Christmas decorations are on sale.  We grab a few stickers and fire up the hot glue gun and go to town.  Usually we do something similar to Becky and grab dollar store toys to fill the stockings.  And of course some chocolates.

As apartment dwellers, it’s just enough of a Christmas touch without too much damage to the walls.  I opted for cute little stocking hangers, and we post the stockings on the bar or a bookcase.  That, with a tree and some wonderful smelling Glade candles – and we got ourselves a Christmas!

My parents have also carried this tradition on, so now Addy has two stockings to decorate.  I like that everyone gets into it, and we really spend some time on these cheapie crafts.  Then you don’t feel bad for sticking them into a box and doing it all over again next year.  I like the expensive, giant, personalized stockings that some families put over the fireplace.  It looks fantastic for pictures.  Buuuut this is more my speed and dedication, or lack thereof.  Plus, it’s the one time of year I can whip out my glue gun and feel crafty.

You know what I LOVED about your picture is that the art work for the stockings were done by the children. There wasn’t an adult interfering with the process (of the art). For young children art is about the process and NOT the product. Away to often parents seem to forget this… I know I am off topic, but it’s something I feel passionately about…
